Eva Longoria disclosed this week that she and her family have bid adieu to the "bleak" United States, now dividing their time between the vibrancy of Mexico and the charm of Spain. "I spent my entire adult life here," Longoria confided to Marie Claire, referring to the United States. "Yet, even before the pandemic struck, something was shifting. The ambiance had altered. And then, COVID-19 arrived, pushing everything to its breaking point. Whether it's the rising homelessness or oppressive taxes—and I don't mean to disparage California—it just feels like this chapter of my life has reached its conclusion."
The Desperate Housewives star cited the recent election as a pivotal factor in her resolution. "The stunning aspect isn't his victory," she remarked about Donald Trump's win last week. "It's that a convicted criminal, who vomits仇恨 so freely, could occupy the highest office in the land. If he fulfills his promises, it will become a terrifying place to live." Reflecting on Trump's 2016 victory, Longoria added, "I've never experienced depression before. It was like, 'Does my vote truly matter? Am I actually making a difference?'" She continued, "I was so disconnected from my core beliefs because I had faith in my soul that the best person wins. But then that happened, and I realized, 'Oh, wait. The best person doesn't always win.'"
Longoria acknowledged that she is fortunate to have the privilege to relocate. "I can escape and find solace elsewhere," she said. "Most Americans aren't so fortunate. They'll be trapped in this bleak country, and my heart aches for them, filled with anxiety and sorrow."
The actress now resides with her husband, José Bastón, and their six-year-old son, Santiago, in Mexico and Spain. Though her work often takes her to various parts of Europe and South America, she seldom returns to Los Angeles.
Elsewhere in the profile, Longoria opened up about her impending 50th birthday. "For me, age is merely a numeral, but I'm thrilled," she exclaimed. "I refuse to accept that my greatest successes lie in the past."
