Nelly Addresses Criticism of Performance at Trump Inauguration Ball: ‘I’m Doing This Because It’s an Honor’

Nelly is standing his ground against detractors who have vocally condemned his upcoming performance at the Liberty Inaugural Ball—one of three official galas marking Donald Trump's return to the Oval Office. During an exclusive interview with Willie D Live, the St. Louis-bred rapper addressed the controversy, brushing aside the political undertones surrounding his appearance and emphasizing that his participation is solely a gesture of respect and honor for the occasion.

"I thought you were with me because I represent my city and strive to elevate it at every turn. Little did I know, your support hinged on my alignment with your political preferences—a revelation that came as a shock," Nelly lamented. "I wasn't aware that I was obligated to concur with your political leanings. I believed actions spoke louder than words. If you follow my deeds, this shouldn't even be a争议点. He's the President. He won. This isn't a campaign rally or an RNC event. I'm not embarked on a political mission here."

He further drew parallels between his performance and the civic duty felt by American servicemen and women who defend their nation. "This isn't a money-making gig for me; it's an honor. I respect the office, regardless of its occupant," he declared. "Just as our men and women in uniform, our brothers and sisters who safeguard our country, must go to war and risk their lives for whoever sits in the Oval Office. If they can pledge their lives without questioning the leader, then damn right, I can perform."

Willie D pressed Nelly on accusations that performing for the office amounted to endorsing Trump. Nelly responded, "More than half of this nation voted for Trump. Respect the democratic process, whether it favors you or not."

Numerous representatives for the rapper declined to comment on Variety's earlier inquiries.

At the Liberty Inaugural Ball, Nelly will share the stage with Village People, whose timeless anthem "Y.M.C.A." became a staple at Trump's campaign rallies. Earlier this week, Village People issued a statement on Facebook regarding their involvement in Trump's swearing-in festivities. "We understand that some may not approve, but we believe music should transcend politics. 'Y.M.C.A.' is a global anthem that can help unite the country post a contentious and divisive election where our preferred candidate lost. Therefore, we've decided to bring the nation together through music, which is why Village People will perform at various events during Donald J. Trump's 2025 Inauguration."

While Nelly and Village People will entertain at the balls, Carrie Underwood, Lee Greenwood, and Christopher Macchio are lined up to perform at the inauguration ceremony itself. On Friday, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, and Soulja Boy generated mixed online reactions at the Crypto Ball, highlighting prior contradictory statements made by some of the rappers.

Interestingly, Nelly's stance on Trump has evolved. In 2017, he told Page Six that he disagreed with Trump's presidential approach. "The truth is, I liked Donald Trump before he became President. I just didn't fancy him as my President," he admitted. "He's quite a character. Pre-presidency, I was cool with Donald. I loved his hotels. I'm more upset with him because now I can't stay at his hotels anymore. You've ruined that for me. I've been a loyal guest for 15 years, and now you do this. Get your act together, buddy."
