Just before 1 pm local time, emergency calls alerted Honolulu Ocean Safety about a surfer being attacked at Mālaekahana Beach. Enright recounted that the jet ski responders arrived at the scene, but it was too late to save Perry. They returned to the shore with Perry's lifeless body, which bore the telltale signs of multiple shark bites. His leg and arm were missing, as reported by Surfer Today.

"This is an incredibly difficult time for us all," Enright said, requesting compassion and understanding as the community grappled with the loss. Local officials echoed Enright's sentiments, describing Perry as a much-loved lifeguard and professional surfer who was renowned worldwide.

Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager praised Perry's infectious personality and his unwavering love for others. "Tamayo's personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more," Lager said, requesting privacy for Perry's family.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also spoke about Perry's life and tragic death at the press conference. "It's a devastating loss. Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected. He grew up here and was a great member of our Ocean Safety Team. It's hard to imagine receiving such a call on a Sunday afternoon," the mayor said.

Perry, born in 1975 and raised on Oahu's East Side, first took to the surfboard at the age of 12. He became famous for his mastery of Pipeline surfing, where surfers brave the large hollow curls of water forming on reefs. Perry competed in events like the Billabong Pro Trials and Pipe Masters Trials, winning accolades along the way. His acting career also flourished, with notable appearances in Pirates of the Caribbean, Blue Crush, Hawaii Five-0, and The Big Bounce.

Perry and his wife, Emilia, owned and instructed at the Oahu Surfing Experience. Their website boasted of their ties to the community and surf scene, promising to ease students into the world of North Shore surfing. After Perry's demise, Ocean Safety personnel issued warnings about potential sharks in the water, a stark reminder of the dangers that even the most skilled surfers face.

Perry's Instagram account reflected his profound love and appreciation for the ocean and beaches that were his second home. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
