Hezekiah wins the innkeeper's favor by conversing in his native tongue, sharing stories of Chinese immigrants who enriched his homeland and revealing that his grandmother hailed from the Hakka community.
Unbeknownst to Hezekiah, Mary Carr and her criminal cohorts have also taken refuge under Mr. Lao's roof.
