Their journey to London harbors dreams for Hezekiah, aspiring to tame lions at a nearby zoo.

A Thousand Blows – Season 1 Episode 1 1

The duo encounters a wall of prejudice when seeking accommodation, echoes of Hezekiah's own eviction from his Jamaican home haunting him. Their fortunes turn when they stumble upon a modest refuge at Mr. Lao's inn. Hezekiah wins the innkeeper's favor by conversing in his native tongue, sharing stories of Chinese immigrants who enriched his homeland and revealing that his grandmother hailed from the Hakka community.

Unbeknownst to Hezekiah, Mary Carr and her criminal cohorts have also taken refuge under Mr. Lao's roof. In a private moment, Mary summons Sharkey to her chamber for an illicit encounter, only to discover he has pilfered marked banknotes adorned with hearts – her signature. After reclaiming her stolen funds, she insists on sexual favors in return, but Sharkey, incapacitated by laughing gas,婉拒her advances. With a forced chuckle, she dismisses him, leaving his professed love unacknowledged.

Desperation gnaws at Hezekiah as funds dwindle, prompting him to urge Alec into participating in the Blue Coat Boy Boxing Night – a night where victory could spell financial salvation. Reluctantly, Alec shells out three shillings for a shot at claiming the evening's spoils, unaware of the perils that await within the ring.

As the elephants dominated the space with their grandeur, Mary issued a caution to Hezekiah, foretelling that Alec stood no chance against the formidable Treacle. In retaliation, Hezekiah accused her of pocketing his shillings while she believed herself unobserved. Together, they witnessed Treacle triumphantly dispatch opponent after opponent with effortless ease. When Alec's turn finally came, he gave Treacle a fierce battle, but in the end, defeat claimed him.

Post-fight, Mary made her official acquaintance with them, only to have her moment disrupted by Sharkey. He hurled insults at the men and beseeched Mary to be his, but she sternly dismissed him, ordering him from her sight.

Later, Mary unveiled her audacious plan for a grand heist to Mr. Lao. A trade delegation, dispatched by Emperor Qing of China, was en route to Westminster, where Queen Victoria intended to bestow upon them magnificent gifts. Mary's strategy was to intercept these treasures, and she required Lao's translation skills to pull it off. She offered him a sum of 200 pounds, but he turned her down flat.

Meanwhile, Hezekiah ventured to the zoo to see Mr. Harkness about the prospect of becoming a lion tamer. However, to his astonishment, he discovered that the genuine job offer was for him to inhabit a cage labeled "Wild Man of Africa." In a swift act of rebellion, Hezekiah imprisoned Mr. Harkness within the cage and walked away unscathed.

Back at the boxing ring, Treacle introduced his brother, the undefeated boxing legend of their neighborhood – Henry "Sugar" Goodson, who stepped into the ring with a flourish. To Mary's utter amazement, Hezekiah emerged to issue him a challenge.
