Margaret Heaton (portrayed by Pippa Haywood) strides into the room, her voice laced with concern as she mentions Cate's recent communication with Ellie Robson. Cate, steely-eyed, believes the world is ripe to learn the secrets of this family. Margaret, attempting to quell the storm, offers her something to silence her lips. Bergerac – Season 1 Episode 6 1

Elsewhere, Uma Dalal (played by Sasha Behar) inquires of Jim Bergerac (Damien Molony) when he last laid eyes on John Blakely (Stephen Wight). Jim speculates it was at his hostel, unaware that John had gone public with the Wakefields' support, accusing Jim of fabricating evidence against him a decade ago. Jim's panic sets in, his commands flying left and right, but Uma stands firm, insisting he cannot be part of this mess. Jim protests, yet Uma persists, urging him to seek solace in his home. Before departing, Jim apologizes to Barney Crozier (Robert Gilbert), handing over the reigns reluctantly. Uma informs Barney of an SIO's impending arrival from the mainland, reassuring him it's not a reflection of his competence but a strategic decision.

Charlie Hungerford (portrayed by Zoe Wanamaker) grills Jim mercilessly upon his return. Jim counters, highlighting their advantage—knowing the abductor's identity. Charlie learns it's the man Jim imprisoned years ago. She reminds Jim of his expertise as Jersey's child abduction specialist. A call from John Blakely interrupts, and Jim, brave or foolish, volunteers to meet him alone. John suggests a rendezvous at the spot where he once planted a strand of hair. Jim borrows Charlie's phone, confident he knows the location. Charlie, furious, slaps Jim before his departure, her disbelief palpable.

Barney and Kara Molloy (Celine Arden) inspect Blakely's room, Kara's sharp eyes catching a sleeping bag on the floor. Suspicious noises from upstairs draw her attention, and she gives chase, cornering Tommy Guthrie (William Edden) as he tries to escape down the stairs. She reminds him of their shared past—Tommy and John Blakely, cellmates at La Moye. Tommy claims a friendly visit, finding John absent. Kara questions him about the sleeping bag, and Tommy confesses his temporary residence. Kara offers assistance in changing his accommodation if he divulges the conversations shared during their sleepovers.

As they exit, Uma instructs Barney and Kara to return, informing them the SIO will arrive momentarily. Barney vents his frustration to Kara about being sidelined once more. Kara, pragmatic, tells him to man up. Jim retrieves a letter bearing his name, his curiosity piqued as he opens it to find a phone number. Dialing the number, John's voice crackles through, his words laden with sorrow over his wife's demise. He claims distance, yet mocks Jim's appearance. John's taunts escalate, culminating in an ominous instruction: to climb into the trunk of his car. Jim, obeying despite himself, finds the car igniting and gliding forward, his fate now entwined with John's sinister plan.

At the police station, Barney is formally introduced to SIO Doug Marsh, portrayed by Matt Slack. They delve into potential locations where John might have abducted Kim, but Doug remains unconvinced by Barney's theories. It seems that Kara and Barney will forge ahead as a team instead. Meanwhile, John forces Jim out of the trunk at gunpoint, ushering him inside where Kim, played by Chloe Sweetlove, awaits. John clarifies that this confrontation is personal, unrelated to Kim. He reveals to Kim that her father fabricated evidence against him a decade ago. Jim protests his innocence, affirming he cannot confess to a crime he didn't commit. John, however, insists otherwise, recounting his visit to his parents after prison. His father's changed perception of him has fueled John's desire to alter Kim's view of him too.

Outside, Barney and Kara scan the building perimeter. John pressures Jim into confessing, promising it will all end if he complies. Jim confesses he suspected John from their first interview but lacked proof; Sophie's statement alone wasn't sufficient. Desperate, Jim secretly took a strand of Kim's hair, planting it in the car as a pretext for a second search. He admits it was because John is a monster who terrified Kim and deserved punishment. Jim also confesses to enjoying the hero's role. John believes this confession will grant him redemption.

Kara discovers the car nearby and alerts Barney. As John aims the gun at Jim, urging Kim to close her eyes, Kara contacts Barney, who clumsily trips, creating a diversion that enables Jim to assault John. Barney warns Kara that Blakely is armed inside. Kara informs the team of their location at Pelham Hall, just as a gunshot echoes from within. Defying orders to stay out, Barney rushes in. In the ensuing struggle, John beats Jim to the ground and regains the gun, but Jim and Barney teamed up to stop him. Kim remains unharmed.

Elsewhere, Arthur, portrayed by Philip Glenister, visits Julien (Timothy Renouf), who learns that Margaret has been charged with perverting the course of justice but released on bail. Arthur foresees a murder charge looming and suggests Julien consider transferring to a more humane prison facility.

Arthur informs Julien that Cate had been in conversation with Ellie Robson, contemplating going public with her story. He cautions Julien against attempting to conclude Cate's affairs, asserting that they needn't fret over Bergerac at present. Julien inquires about their strategy concerning Margaret, to which Arthur responds, "It's taken care of." Margaret discovers to her dismay that she has been barred from accessing the Wakefield property.

At the police station, Jim consults with his colleagues. Uma reproaches him for his impulsiveness, reminding Kara and Barney of their own reckless behavior. She underscores the necessity of acquiring a statement from Kim and assigns Barney to oversee the Wakefield case, urging Jim to return home and remain there. As Jim exits, the team dives into their investigation. Uma inquiries about Fred's identification progress, to which Barney replies they are still at work on it but possess sufficient evidence to apprehend Margaret immediately.

In a solemn chapel, Margaret sits alone, anticipating her impending arrest. Meanwhile, Jim pays a visit to Pete Benedict in his private consultation room. Pete becomes privy to the John Blakely abduction saga and suggests a contact for Kim when she's prepared to speak. Jim reveals they are about to make an arrest, which might unveil details linking him to Blakely, confessing he had fabricated evidence, potentially facing incarceration. When Pete inquires about the target of their arrest, Jim reveals it's Margaret. Pete's revelation that he lied about his wife's demise catches Jim off guard. Pete admits he did so to deter Jim from ending their sessions, taking his case out of fascination with his potential as an intriguing client. He reminds Jim of his promise to facilitate a conversation between Kim and her late mother. With the case concluded, Pete insists there are no more excuses left and proposes a practice session with Jim, probing him about the night his wife Rachel passed away.

Jim recounts the harrowing six days—though technically spanning six months—acknowledging gaps in his memory. Pete persists in his belief that Jim retains more recollections than he admits. Jim describes the photos framing Rachel's bed, one on the right and another across from it, painting a poignant scene of loss and longing.

He devoted six entire days to gazing intently at the painting, lost in his thoughts. Pete, desperate to pry open his closed heart about those mysterious six days, left the room momentarily to fetch some sugar. Seizing the opportunity, Jim cast a glance at his books, then shifted a lamp before resuming his seat. Upon Pete's return, Jim casually mentioned that Pete had advised him to disregard his misgivings concerning Mia and Tomos. Jim disclosed that Uma had dismissed him prior to the Kim fiasco because he had visited John, news that Pete had relayed to Uma. Jim inquired whether Cate had been among their clients, revealing that Cate had been in communication with someone she referred to as Fred.

Jim suggested that obtaining a client list wouldn't be a herculean task, prompting Pete to confess that Cate was indeed a client. She had been lonely, and the atmosphere at the Wakefield residence was far from conducive to well-being. Pete had taken Jim on as a client solely to stay abreast of the case. Jim revealed that Cate's secondary phone had been used to reach Ellie and inquired whether Pete's number was on it. Pete acknowledged that Cate had wanted to keep her visits a secret from Julien and the rest. Jim deduced that Pete had also communicated with Cate on the night she passed away; she had conveyed her intentions to leave, to which Pete had wished her well. Jim realized Pete too had been using a second phone to converse with Cate. He postulated that Cate held a special place in Pete's heart, hypothesizing that Pete might have visited her house, pleading with her to stay or elope with him, inadvertently leaving behind his DNA. Pete conceded his fault, believing he could have brought unparalleled happiness to Cate. Jim promptly arrested him on suspicion of murdering Cate Wakefield.

Meanwhile, Barney and Simon brainstormed a strategy for their upcoming interview with Margaret, only to be interrupted by Kara, announcing that Bergerac had called. Subsequently, Margaret met with Chloe to discuss Cate, who had been on the brink of fleeing. Margaret admitted her fondness for Cate and handed her an envelope filled with documents. Elsewhere, Jim confessed to planting evidence in John Blakely's car and requested an investigation into the matter. Uma inquired whether it was an isolated incident, to which Jim assured her it was. Uma agreed not to pursue further action.

She gently reminds him that every individual he has imprisoned will undoubtedly seek retribution through retrials, making it prudent to let the matter rest. Uma informs him that Mia and Tomos have set their sights on adopting Lily, while there seems to be little they can intervene in regarding Arthur's situation. Uma can only harbor the hope that karma, the universal balancer of deeds, truly exists. Arthur dials Margaret's number, confessing that he's become somewhat petty in his recent demeanor. He enlists her help to review his statement, as the media awaits eagerly outside, vying for his words. As Arthur begins to recite his prepared statement, Chloe interrupts, probing him about any illicit activities tied to his acquisition of Allie Cirocell, hinting at evidence that someone under his command had orchestrated a hack into a company director's emails.

Kim encounters Jim, who has been tinkering with his car, and they exchange pleasantries. Jim shares with Charlie that the therapist has deemed Kim's progress satisfactory. Kim admits that, despite this, she still has an unspeakable anger towards Jim, and she feels at a loss for what to do with this emotion. Upon Kim's departure, she inquires about the reasoning behind her mother gifting Jim the car. Jim reveals that it was her mother's belief that he needed a constructive outlet – a project to focus on. Their conversation drifts towards Rachel, but Jim swiftly diverts it by suggesting they talk about dinner plans. Curiosity piqued, he wonders aloud if he's ever recounted the tale of his encounter with Rachel to Kim. She eagerly urges him to recount the story once more.
