With a tender touch, Mathilda entrusted Pearl with the role of godmother, asking her to safeguard Covey in her absence.

A fleeting vision then unfolds, showing Covey engaged in the final act of baking her signature black cake. Her cancer, a relentless foe, had tightened its grip, and she knew her days were numbered. Despite this, Byron, with unwavering dedication, offered to lend a hand. As he stirred the batter, Covey watched with tender eyes but soon took over when Byron's efforts fell short. She left behind the recipe as a legacy, urging Byron to continue the tradition through his own offspring.

Black Cake – Season 1 Episode 8 1

Now, in the present, the trio - Byron, Benny, and Mathilda - gather around the frozen cake, a prized relic entrusted by Covey. With a precise cut from a sharp knife, they delve into the layers, uncovering a hidden jar. Inside, a photograph captures the smiles of Covey, Gibbs, and Bunny. Benny's curiosity prompts her to search for Bunny's formal name on Google, revealing that Bunny, alias Etta Pringle, was a renowned swimmer who upheld her promise to Covey by breaking all-female swimming records. Alongside the photo, a recording of Bunny's voice is discovered.

Eager to reunite with Bunny, the siblings embark on a journey to San Diego for a book signing event. However, Etta remains hesitant, her heart guarded by the memories of Covey's wedding night. She declines their invitation to attend Covey's funeral, leaving Benny determined to encourage Byron to reveal the truth about Eleanor's life as Covey in his eulogy. The world deserves to know the real Coventina.

Byron's astonishment intensifies when Lynette appears, announcing her pregnancy. While he hopes for a future with her, Lynette struggles with the decision of spending her life with Byron. In the final row of the funeral, Mabel and Benny sit side by side. Mabel shares her experience of being unable to attend Paolo's funeral due to his parents' interference. Unexpectedly, Byron slips away before Mitch takes the stage, confessing that he can no longer sustain the lies.

As the funeral commences, Etta arrives, moved by the recording. She follows Byron to the beach, where she mentions a Caribbean tradition of honoring the deceased on the ninth day after their passing. Etta explains that according to Jamaican beliefs, a person's evil shadow may linger indefinitely if not banished by the ninth night. The sea breeze whispers their secrets, and the sky above seems to weep for a lost soul, as Etta and Byron stand on the shore, reflecting on the life and legacy of their beloved Covey.

The Singling and Etta meticulously plan a traditional memorial dinner in honor of Covey, recollecting the comfort and unwavering support she had offered in the parish. Benny's heart swells with joy as she shares this moment with her loved ones, yet a pang of sorrow strikes her as she realizes the fleeting nature of their gathering; soon, everyone will return to their daily grind. However, her companions reassure her that they will always be a pillar of support. B&B gently prompts Mabel to reveal the truth to Gio, urging him not to repeat the mistakes of his father, Covey.

Benny courageously bares her soul, revealing her dark secret - Steve. The mention of Steve's visit stirs up Byron's confusion, igniting a heated argument between them. Ette steps in, urging them to let go of their shadows in order to move forward. She then recounts the fateful wedding night, sharing how she had conspired with Pearl weeks before to poison Little Man's drink, using the poisonous fruit depicted in the opening scene of the finale. Pearl had warned Bunny against revealing the plan to Covey, planning to send her away to London with a new identity. Benny's role was to distract Covey, while Bunny waited for Gibbs, hoping for a better plan. But impatience got the better of her, and she followed Pearl's plan, poisoning Little Man's drink.

The foursome decides to return to Covey's coffin, placing a token that binds them to her memory. As the episode draws to a close, Benny finds newfound inspiration to embrace her creativity. Byron decides to seek legal redress against the institute, with Mitch standing by her side. Mabel listens intently to Covey's recording once again, hoping to uncover the identity of her biological father. Covey's words hint that Mabel's father plays a pivotal role in the food critic's life story. But just as the truth is about to be revealed, Mabel stops the recording, leaving us with a tantalizing cliffhanger. If Covey's abusive boss isn't Mabel's father, then who is? The credits roll, leaving us with more questions than answers, setting the stage for a possible second season.
