Forced to flee the celebration prematurely, Gala rushes home to confront Fred, who's hastily packing his belongings. Amidst the chaos, he urges her to evacuate their mother and daughter from the city's clutches, promising to rectify the dire situation. With little else to go on, Gala frantically gathers their essentials, determined to evade the relentless creditors.

Discovering her finances in shambles, Gala resorts to desperate measures, liquidating precious jewelry, including her wedding band, to amass a meager $50,000 in cash. Strapping the money to her person, she conceals it beneath her attire, narrowly escaping the debt collectors' grasp.

In a heart-wrenching scene, Gala collects her mother, Julia, who battles dementia, from the nursing home, and then springs a spontaneous girls' trip on her daughter, Kate, fresh from college. Cleverly framing the idea as Julia's longing to revisit La Muga, the Spanish town of her youth, Gala deceives Kate with a tale of Julia's supposed dying wish, securing her daughter's reluctant consent.

Secretly, Gala harbors the hope that La Muga will serve as a sanctuary, as Julia claims to retain ownership of half her childhood home. However, upon their arrival in Spain, Gala encounters a roadblock—unable to rent a car without a credit card, she's forced to purchase a battered second-hand vehicle from a stranger. The challenge intensifies when she realizes she's unfamiliar with driving a manual transmission, but necessity becomes the mother of invention.

As they embark on their journey, Julia, in a moment of confusion, steers them away from La Muga and towards a sprawling vineyard. In a harrowing turn of events, Gala accidentally collides with a tractor, spilling its precious grape harvest. Amat, the enraged tractor driver, confronts Gala, demanding compensation for the damage. Desperate to avoid conflict and escape, Gala's attention is suddenly diverted by the realization that Julia has vanished into thin air, setting the stage for an even more perilous adventure.

They stumbled upon Julia, blissfully immersed in the river's embrace, her memories drifting back to her youthful days of aquatic frolics. Her dementia momentarily blurred the lines, mistaking Gala for her beloved sister Mariona. Impulsively, Julia tugged Gala and Kate along, inviting them into the watery embrace. Gala initially laughed it off, but her mirth faded as she realized her hidden stash of money was now afloat, scattering like leaves in autumn.

Once Gala frantically gathered her scattered funds, Kate and Julia's curiosity peaked, sensing a deeper story beneath the surface. Gala promised an explanation later, but their troubles seemed to multiply. Returning to the car, they found it stubbornly unresponsive, its engine silent as a grave. Amat, their reluctant navigator, revealed they had strayed from the path to La Muga, his humble abode. In a show of kindness, he offered them a ride on his trusty tractor, though his generosity came with a twist.

When they presented a snapshot of Julia's former home, Amat's demeanor shifted, insisting it now belonged to him—a purchase from Julia's sister. He deposited them near Mariona's doorstep, hoping for some clarity, only to find the door slammed shut in their faces. The town, too, seemed indifferent to Julia's return, Amat's announcement met with a collective shrug.

Kate's patience wore thin, probing Gala for the true purpose of their journey. No longer convinced by the pretext of a dying grandmother, Gala's confession unraveled their financial woes. Their world narrowed to a fistful of cash and Julia's half-share of a house in La Muga, Gala steadfast in her belief that Fred was navigating their troubles from afar. Until then, La Muga was their sanctuary.

Ignoring Amat's claim to the property, they ventured into Julia's childhood haven, only to be confronted by his angry voice summoning the authorities. And who should arrive but Julia's former flame, Andreu, now a seasoned cop. His heart still fluttered for her, yet duty compelled him to arrest them for trespassing.

As the three women found themselves behind bars, the narrative shifted to Kate's lover, Maggie, her peaceful dormitory life disrupted by the ominous presence of debt collectors.
