Meanwhile, Mortimer shifts his gaze towards Lydia, attempting to coerce her into broaching the subject of Ruby with James. Despite being aware of her father's intentions, Lydia complies, delivering his message to James while ignoring Elaine's eager inquiries about the rumored romantic entanglement between Ruby and James. James senses the pressure his father is exerting, and he devotes himself to formulating a carefully crafted speech for the upcoming press conference.

On the flip side, Lydia endeavors to persuade Sutton to reconcile, but he steadfastly refuses, citing his reluctance to tear her away from her loved ones. Lydia feels stung, branding Sutton as selfish. Jealousy gnaws at her as she suspects Sutton of courting his former lover, another teacher.

Meanwhile, whispers about a supposed liaison between Ruby and James begin to circulate. Ruby confides in Lin, insisting that nothing untoward has transpired. Lin, disappointed, inquiries when the pair will finally share a kiss.

Later in the day, the committee scrambles to prepare for the looming party, but a hiccup arises. Rutherford insists on procuring live partridges instead of the slaughtered ones originally ordered. Amidst the flurry of party planning, James discovers that Ruby's birthday coincides with the event. He vows to arrive early enough to secure the honor of sharing her first dance.

Throughout the remainder of the day, James lends a helping hand with the party arrangements and confides in Alistair about his clandestine romance with Patel. Alistair, while hurt that Patel isn't ready to come out publicly, extends his understanding and support.

To ensure James remains steadfast on his intended path, Mortimer cunningly orchestrates a dinner party, deliberately scheduling it to coincide with a meeting with the head of PR. This clever maneuver effectively bars James from attending the festivities. Mortimer, in a moment of intimidation, warns James that his choices must be weighted carefully, brandishing a photograph taken the previous evening as a threat.

The following day, James sends Ruby a lavish handbag and a portrait, meticulously crafted with her likeness. She is deeply touched by the gesture, especially knowing that he had personally painted it. Her joy is unbounded as she celebrates with her family, their spirits lifted by this unexpected gift.

At the Beaufort household, James confides in Percy, confessing his inner turmoil. He longs to be present for Ruby's birthday celebration but is also torn by his familial obligations. He admits to Lydia that he feels powerless over his own destiny, as if his life is merely a reflection of his family's name. Lydia vents her frustration, railing against the loss of her creativity and hard work, overshadowed by James's involvement. Her father's lingering punishment over a past scandal with an ex-boyfriend and the media only adds to her burden.

Prior to the party, James heads to school, assisting the committee in locating the escaped live partridges. His bond with Ruby deepens as they chase the birds together, their laughter and excitement filling the air. James confesses to her his uncertainty about Oxford and his future aspirations, expressing reluctance about the upcoming press conference. He feels defined solely by his family's legacy, unable to make choices that truly reflect his desires. Ruby, in her wise and compassionate manner, encourages him to forge his own path and seek happiness.

Later, she visits the Dean, pleading for James's reinstatement on the Lacrosse team if the party is successful. She sings his praises, highlighting his growth and maturity, convincing the Dean of his worthiness.

As the evening draws nearer and the party begins, Ruby appears stunning in her dress, yet her nerves are on edge. She fears that something might derail their plans, but Lin's reassuring words help her let go and immerse in the festivities.

Meanwhile, James and Lydia attend the press conference, engaging in a candid discussion about their parents' intention to make James the face of the new collection despite Lydia's efforts. James argues that the demands are relentless, and they implore Percy to turn the car around. James opts to attend the party while Lydia bravely faces the press conference alone. Mortimer, upon learning of their decision, nearly succumbs to a panic attack.

At the party, James and Ruby dance the night away, their laughter and joy infecting the air. A temporary blackout threatens to dampen the mood, but the pair remains unruffled, their bond stronger than any obstacle. They steal away from their friends, seeking a moment of privacy. Their chemistry ignites, leading to a tender kiss, but their moment is abruptly shattered when Mortimer arrives to collect James.
