The narrative then abruptly shifts to a seemingly enchanting evening for Kat Donovan. Following a cozy dinner with a gym acquaintance, the night takes a dramatic turn when a violent altercation erupts in the kitchen. A chef discovers his partner's betrayal, and ironically, her lover is none other than his co-worker in the same kitchen. In a fit of rage, he slashes the other chef's leg, severing an artery and leaving the victim with mere minutes to live.

It transpires that Kat, our intrepid protagonist, is a detective. As the enraged chef lunges toward her, she swiftly activates the fire alarm and expertly neutralizes him. With the threat neutralized, she expertly directs traffic around the chaotic scene. It's also revealed that she fibbed to her date, portraying herself as an air hostess, though the reasons for her deception remain unclear.

This thrilling introduction segues into a scene at the precinct, where Kat is promptly thrust into a new case: Professor Rishi Magari has vanished, and he is the same man we glimpsed earlier, tumbling from his horse. As the head of the Missing Persons Unit, Kat not only excels in physical confrontations and possesses extensive medical knowledge, but she also possesses a knack for winning over people and solving cases.

At the station, Kat welcomes a new colleague, Charlie Pitts, a Digital Media analyst. As Charlie settles into his seat and pulls out his laptop (right in front of Kat, might I add), he proceeds to stalk her online. It emerges that Kat's past is haunted by the murder of her father, with the killer now behind bars. Kat catches Charlie in the act, leading to an icy introduction between the two.

Kat and Charlie venture out and discover Rishi's car abandoned in the woods. Charlie adeptly disables the car alarm and gains access to the vehicle. Inside the trunk, they find only an umbrella and little else, leaving the mystery of Rishi's whereabouts as deep and perplexing as the forest that surrounds them.

Kat's overarching dilemma is deeply rooted in her past and her relentless struggle to find genuine love. She finds herself impulsively bouncing from one relationship to the next, failing to forge meaningful connections. This erratic behavior is a repercussion of a traumatic past encounter with a man called Josh, who, despite sharing a strong bond with her, abruptly vanished into thin air for eleven years, abandoning her during a tumultuous time when she was mourning the loss of her beloved father.

When Kat stumbles upon Josh on a dating app, her emotions are thrown into a tailspin. Her friend Stacey, sensing the potential for heartache, advises her against reaching out and reconnecting. Seeking solace, Kat turns to another friend, Aqua, as they grapple together with what course of action to take. However, the plot thickens when Kat discovers that Monte, the man who brutally took her father's life, is terminally ill with cancer and has mere days left to live. Kat is yearning for answers, desperate for the closure she so rightly deserves. She needs to know: why did Calligan compensate Monte for committing such a heinous act?

After receiving wise counsel from her mother, Kat resolves to bravely confront Josh once more and to visit Monte in prison, fully intent on extracting every detail of the truth from him. As she tentatively taps the 'connect' button on the app, her work interruptions resume when Charlie's call pulls her away. It transpires that Rishi's email has been flagged in numerous data breaches, revealing his subscriptions to various websites, including one for cottages situated miles away from where his abandoned car was found.

Last Friday, Rishi made a reservation that finally unveiled the mystery surrounding the enigmatic character loitering around the episode – he was the protagonist in question. Rishi, accompanied by an unseen companion, was suddenly struck from behind with a cattle prod, causing him to collapse unconscious. It emerged that Rishi had booked for two guests, suggesting a prearranged meeting, evidenced by the discovery of underwear and wine at the scene.

Meanwhile, Kat was granted a ten-minute visit with Monte in prison, albeit with a caution that his consciousness was intermittent, leaving the effectiveness of their conversation uncertain. Monte provoked Kat, yet she persisted, her tears streaming down despite the adversity. Monte refused to confess the truth, pleading with Kat, which was precisely his intention. However, the nurse, sensing Kat's plight, decided to intervene by administering Monte a shot of morphine, aiming to elevate his high and loosen his tongue.

The strategy seemed to bear fruit. With the drugs coursing through his veins, Monte hallucinated his sister, Angie, in Kat's place. It transpired that Monte wasn't hired to kill Kat's father, Clint, but rather to take the blame. Monte had terminated several lives in the past, yet Clint Donovan wasn't one of them. He struck a deal to perpetuate a falsehood, a mere pastime for him since life imprisonment was already a certainty.

As Kat grappled with the gravity of this revelation, another layer of the narrative unfolded: Josh had visited Monte the day before he abandoned Kat. Inevitably, Josh messaged Kat, deciding to "mute" her, convinced that continued communication was unwise.
