The next morning, as the festivities for the 4th of July gather momentum, the Mayor meets with the menacing biker man. The latter issues a chilling ultimatum, demanding that the Mayor find Hopper or face dire consequences.

Meanwhile, Hopper and Joyce continue their intense interrogation of Alexei. After a tense standoff, they finally pry information from him. He reveals that they are utilizing a machine that harnesses energy to carve a portal between two worlds. Since the gateway in Hawkins was recently sealed, it's a prime target for reactivation. They also inquire about the possibility of shutting it down, to which he responds that it's feasible but far from straightforward, as accessing the facility is a formidable task.

Down in the underground, Dustin and Erica embark on a perilous mission to rescue their trapped friends. Steve endures brutal interrogation as the Russians mistake him for a spy. Robin and Steve find a moment of intimacy amidst the chaos, sharing heartfelt conversations about popularity and their school days. Suddenly, the Russians reappear and inject Steve with a mysterious liquid, forcing him to spill his secrets.

Elsewhere, El spends her days blinded, searching for the possessed, while others debate her overuse of her powers. Back at Mike's house, they discuss the horrors of the flayed and notice that Billy remains secluded in his room. El decides to delve deeper, blindfolding herself once again. She tracks down Billy and, as her fingers brush against him, she is suddenly transported to a bygone era, finding herself on a sun-kissed beach, a vision from the past unfolding before her eyes.

Then, we are transported into Billy's memories, a haunting glimpse into his tormented childhood. El's relentless pursuit finally leads her to the source, but not without revealing her whereabouts. A enraged Billy warns her that they will eliminate her and everyone else.

Meanwhile, the Russians attempt to interrogate Robin and Steve once again. This time, Robin decides to reveal the secrets of the intercepted code. Suddenly, an alarm blares, signaling the release of the green liquid. Dustin rushes to the rescue, arriving just in time.

As El prepares to return to her companions from the astral plane, we witness Hawkins' citizens from the fair converging on the factory. Upon arrival, they transform, one by one, into a slimy mass and merge with the monster, making it more immense and formidable than ever.
