The Curse – Season 1 Episode 7

Published: Jun 27 2024

Episode 7 of The Curse kicks off with Nala earnestly attempting to harness her supposed cursing abilities. We had witnessed earlier that the young girl believed she possessed exceptional powers. Yet, Nala felt uneasy wielding them against strangers, except when it came to the school bully, Josie. With malice in her heart, she curses the climbing rope Josie clung to, bidding it to "fall." However, nothing untoward occurred. As Nala's turn came to ascend the rope, she found herself incapable, much to her dismay. Josie, sensing Nala's distress, offered words of comfort, but Nala remained unmoved, solidifying the divide between them.

Frustrated, Nala approached their teacher, hoping for justice. But he dismissed her complaint with a wave of his hand, urging her to maintain a positive mindset.

Meanwhile, Whitney sped towards the mini-golf course, her eyes fixed on the offensive Native American decoration. She purchased the offensive piece, placed it in the backseat of her car, and made her way to Cara's abode. Cara was taken aback, offended, and perplexed, yet she reluctantly let Whitney and the decoration inside. Whitney wasted no time and brought up the issue of the release form. Cara, however, refused to sign it, citing Whit's parents, Paul and Lizzy, as her reason. They had a history of injustice towards the less fortunate, and Cara would not lend her name to such an enterprise.

This had been a long-simmering issue, but Whitney clung to the faintest spark of hope. Cara's refusal left her reeling. Cara revealed that her decision was influenced by Whit's parents' actions, but Whit tried to distance herself from their misdeeds. She even resorted to emotional manipulation, citing Cara's unhappy marriage to Asher. Though it was a facade, there was a grain of truth in her words. Asher, indeed, did not prioritize Whit's artistic pursuits, focusing solely on monetary gains.

Desperate, Whit offered Cara the role of an art consultant, a position that Asher had proposed in Episode 3. Cara was instantly drawn to the lucrative offer but hesitated to align her name with the show.

The situation became even more awkward when we shifted our focus to the comedy class Asher attended. The teacher, employing Rodney Dangerfield's trademark self-deprecating humor, illustrated how people are drawn to those who are self-aware. Earlier, Asher had confessed to the teacher about his "small penis," and now the teacher used this sensitive topic to illustrate his point.

When Asher stumbled upon an inane joke, the teacher seized the opportunity, transforming it into a witty remark. However, this unintentional jest struck a nerve among some in the group, who deemed it as a transgression. As a result, the blame shifted squarely onto Asher, and he was effectively banished from the classroom. Asher's anger boiled over as he stormed out, leaving behind a trail of indignation.

Upon reaching home, Whitney cast him a stern glance and retreated into another room. Asher, unperturbed, proceeded to play a snippet from Monica's report on the casino gaming board, showcasing footage that he had surreptitiously obtained. In one particular segment, Asher's laughter rang out, mocking a woman who had been unjustly treated by the casino. Whitney's disappointment was palpable as she realized that Asher had been a part of that entire sordid affair.

The following day, Whit arrived at the filming set expecting a shoot about home renovations. Instead, Dougie cornered her with questions about Asher and their marriage, probing her doubts about its durability and resilience in the face of challenges. The subsequent scene hinted at cracks widening and a new player emerging in this intricate equation. Whitney giggled heartily over one of Dougie's absurd anecdotes, only to be interrupted by Asher's oblivious entrance. She promptly declined his invitation to Shabbat dinner, leaving Asher perplexed and alone.

As Asher's moment to address the camera and voice his grievances approached, Tonya murmured a hurried warning to Dougie about the ticking clock. The shoot abruptly concluded, leaving Asher red-faced, realizing he had never invited Dougie to Shabbat dinner, despite knowing of his Jewish faith. The following day, Whitney accompanied Paul to retrieve a cash sum of 40,000, clarifying it as another "loan" to be repaid. She promptly handed half of it to Cara, who was astonished by the swift transaction. Subtly, Whitney inserted a question about Cara's artwork being featured on the show, and this time, Cara readily concurred. Whitney presented her with the release document, which Cara signed without hesitation. The girls further strengthened their unconventional bond by indulging in a game of basketball.

Asher reflected on his confrontation with Whitney at the episode's onset, jotting down notes with a desire to mend their strained relationship. Meanwhile, Nala conversed casually with a classmate, her "curse" having finally taken effect. Josie's mishap during a game, where she fell and injured herself, provided Nala with profound insights into her own "powers."
