Published: Jun 04 2024

Shaun (portrayed by Freddie Highmore) and Jordan's patient, Naomi (played by Zarrin Darnell-Martin), is a mother desperately awaiting a kidney transplant. Suddenly, "Emmanuel" (Guillermo Diaz) enters the scene, claiming to be a carpenter with a single name adopted from his father's side in Nazareth. He proclaims himself a universal donor, sparking instant concern from Jordan, who instantly senses a deeper issue. Jordan promptly arrives at a diagnosis: the man believes he is Jesus, a revelation that Jordan views as a significant obstacle.

Dom (Wavyy Jonez), revealing his past as a theology major, steps in to explain why Emmanuel's claim isn't as "crazy" as it sounds, drawing parallels to his own spiritual quest following the loss of his mother. But back to the medical crisis, Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) urgently declares that Naomi needs that kidney immediately.

After a thorough evaluation, Emmanuel is cleared for surgery. However, he suddenly collapses, leaving Shaun to deduce that Emmanuel has a pheochromocytoma on his kidney, releasing hormones that could be causing his delusional state. After much debate, Jordan, Lim, and Shaun agree that Emmanuel must undergo surgery to remove the "pheo" first, ensuring a clear mind for the kidney donation.

Before Emmanuel's surgery, Jordan engages him in a profound conversation, treating him as if he were truly Jesus. She unleashes her pent-up pain, anger, and grief over Asher's death, using the guise of "God's plan" as a veil for her true feelings. The exchange is deeply moving and seems to strike a chord with Emmanuel. He encourages Jordan to continue speaking to God, even when her words are unpleasant.

When Emmanuel awakens from his first surgery, his delusion has lifted, and he no longer believes he is Jesus. His real name is Carl, and he now decides against donating his kidney. As his surgeon, Shaun respects his choice. As Carl prepares to leave the hospital, he catches sight of the worried family of the kidney patient, a sight that leaves a lasting impression on him.

Carl confides in Jordan, revealing that his mind deceived him into believing he held significance, whereas in truth, he was merely a figure of indifference. Curious about Asher, Carl inquiries about his nature, and Jordan's eyes sparkle as she reminisces about her friend. This conversation prompts a change of heart in Carl, who now resolves to donate his kidney.

During the surgery, Carl's life hangs in the balance as he hemorrhages soon after Lim removes his kidney. A chilling moment ensues, reminiscent of Park's desire to peacefully fade into the abyss, never to awaken. However, thanks to Jordan's intervention, Carl escapes the clutches of death.

As Jordan's heart slowly mends, she lowers her sun visor, revealing a cherished photograph of her and Asher. She begins to share with him the tale of a patient who deluded himself into believing he was Jesus. She is not alone in her gradual progress towards healing.

Jerome, too, mourns the loss of Asher. Kalu reaches out to him, offering a glimpse into Asher's bucket list and an invitation to tick off its items together. Jerome knows precisely what he desires most - the tattoos of a big spoon and a little spoon that Asher had wished for them to have. In the episode's closing moments, Jerome inks his skin with an intertwined image of the spoons.

Elsewhere, Park's patient lies hospitalized after a parachute landing that fell short of expectations. The man, accompanied by his daughter, strives to fulfill items on his bucket list, chronicling their journey through social media. Despite being told he had only ten months to live, he has defied fate, surviving for two months longer.

To their relief, the patient escapes a fractured femur. Faced with two surgical options, he and his daughter opt for the quicker recovery. Once on the operating table, Park discovers a potential path to rid the patient of his tumor. However, the road ahead is fraught with risk - it could leave the patient paralyzed.

The father, haunted by the promise he made to touch the sky with his daughter when she was young, is torn. After a heartfelt conversation with Jerome, who wishes he could have foreseen his final moments with Asher, the father and daughter decide to embark on the risky surgery. In the closing montage, the father, aided by Park, Dom, and Kalu, scales the summit of Mount Umunhum with his daughter. Together, they reach out and touch the sky.

As Glassman, portrayed by Richard Schiff, anxiously awaited the pending imaging results, he treated a patient named Ruby Kelly, whom he suspected might be harboring a serious condition despite her apparent drug-seeking behavior. After conducting a series of tests, Glassman proposed a diagnosis of Chiari Zero. However, Lim, played by Christina Chang, remained unconvinced, speculating that Glassman's late daughter was clouding his judgment.

It turned out that Glassman's hunch was spot on. Lim cautioned him that the patient not only had Chiari Zero but was also struggling with addiction, both of which required urgent attention. As the young woman slowly roused from her slumber, Glassman anxiously awaited her recovery. He cleverly distracted her with promises of morphine before receiving a foreboding call with the imaging results. He urgently inquired if they were certain, and upon receiving confirmation, he requested a copy of the report and hung up.

True to his diligent nature, Glassman returned to the patient's bedside and sat down to watch TV with her. Meanwhile, Lim observed them with a concerned expression from outside the room.

Elsewhere, Lea confided in Morgan that she had found the perfect dream nanny for baby Steve. However, after finalizing the details with Shaun, she discovered that Morgan had also hired the same nanny. This revelation sparked a mommy drama that threatened to overshadow the hospital's harmony.

Park attempted to broker peace talks, but the tension persisted until Shaun proposed a novel solution: a hospital daycare. By the end of the episode, the nanny had settled into her new role, caring for each couple's baby. Lea was relieved to see Steve adapting well, but Shaun had a different interpretation. Was Steve showing early signs of autism? The question hung heavily in the air, leaving viewers on a tense cliffhanger.
