Published: Jul 22 2024

Episode 6 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel kicks off with a serene scene of Midge seated at the breakfast table with her parents, eagerly reminding them of her imminent performance. Meanwhile, Sophie sits in solitude, her nerves palpable as the investors arrive for the play's run-through. Susie, a poker-faced professional, navigates through conversations with the cast and crew, finally addressing Sophie with steely determination. However, to everyone's surprise, Sophie's performance turns out to be a stellar one, surpassing all expectations.

Joel, overwhelmed with stress, refuses to let the children visit Midge in Florida. He receives a phone call that reveals a ray of hope - his liquor license for the club has been unexpectedly granted, despite initial rejection. Overjoyed, he shares the news with the others but his joy is short-lived when he learns that Mei was the one who helped him. Annoyed, he expresses his dissatisfaction, as he desired to make the club a success on his own. This leads to Mei storming off in a huff.

On Shy's boat, the band abandons him after enduring his erratic mood swings. Midge, however, remains unfazed and boards the boat alone. As they sail the sea, they indulge in wine and food, but soon the conversation shifts to Shy's past. Here, Midge learns the startling revelation that Shy is gay and uses the women around him as a buffer.

On the night of the big performance, Midge's parents arrive with Susie. While Susie struggles valiantly to keep Rose sober, Midge shines on the stage. In the morning, however, Midge barges into her parents' room, yanking the curtains open, rousing her mother, and chastising her for not truly witnessing the show due to her intoxication.

Elsewhere, Archie's wife storms into the club, scolding him for neglecting their children. As the evening progresses, Joel warns Archie against overindulging and urges him to return home for Imogen. However, after buying drinks for a few girls, Joel's words lead to a fight between them, resulting in both of them being expelled from the club.

With Shy missing from practice, Midge rushes back to the boat, descending into the dimly lit cabin. She finds Shy, blind drunk, sitting over a glass of scotch. It transpires that he has been attacked, but despite Midge's urging, he refuses to seek medical attention. Instead, he is adamant about making it to his next performance. Clutching a stool, he walks onto the stage and delivers a heartfelt rendition of "No One Has To Know," a song that holds profound meaning for him given his recent ordeal. Reggie, seemingly, understands the depth of this moment.

While the big reveal surrounding Shy Baldwin is undoubtedly the focal point of this episode, the plot development itself is somewhat lacking. However, this allows the characters to shine, particularly Susie's efforts to manage Sophie's career, offering a stark contrast to Midge's approach. As we inch closer to the finale, numerous questions remain unanswered, leaving us eagerly anticipating the next few episodes.
