The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Season 5 Episode 7 1

A trip back to 1954 takes us to Abe's toast to Joel on his marriage to Miriam. Over a drink, Abe confides in Joel that firstborn Weissman males possess an exceptional intellect that blossoms at age six. He advises Joel to expect their future son to be a prodigy, but to abstain from any attention until the boy reaches that milestone. Abe followed this practice with Noah as well.

Returning to the present, Abe argues vehemently with his family, insisting that Ethan's happiness is a detriment. Geniuses, he maintains, are not inclined to joy. This leads to a heated exchange with Joel over his disregard for Abe's instructions regarding Ethan.

At the office, Midge and her fellow writers brainstorm ideas for comedian Danny Stevens' segment promoting his new book. Midge suggests that Danny simply share his life story, as it's the subject of his book. Initially skeptical, Danny warms up to the idea once he steps in front of the camera. The audience is enraptured by his life narratives, and Danny is so grateful for Midge's advice that he offers her a writing job on his sitcom. This enrages Gordon, who feels Danny is luring away his talent.

As the poker game wound down, Susie cornered Mike for a chat. From his lips, she discovered that Jack Paar's talent scout was scouting for fresh faces, and Mike had already secured Midge a spot in a showcase. However, he doubted his ability to persuade Gordon to bend the rule barring his employees from appearing on the show. Still, Susie struggled to persuade a reluctant Midge to pivot her attention towards Paar.

When Midge learned of her impending salary hike, she promptly visited Gordon's office. He confessed that he had to outbid Danny Stevens just to retain her as a writer. Then, Midge announced her intention to perform for Jack Paar. She attempted to convince Gordon to book her first, but he remained steadfast in adhering to his strict rule.

Midge delivered a stellar showcase, yet the talent scout showed no interest in her. Instead, he desired to book Susie's other client, James Howard. Susie hesitated to discuss James, but Midge stepped in, urging her to give James the opportunity. She shouldn't jeopardize James's chances for Midge's sake.

Flashing forward to 1973, Susie revisited the location where Rose's matchmaking commercial was filmed. Midge's accountant cautioned her that the expenses were mounting, suggesting they should shut down the business and simply pay Rose's salary. But Midge knew that Rose's need transcended mere monetary value. "It will stay open as long as Rose needs it," she said resolutely.

In the current moment, Rose informed Midge that her event plans had fallen through, assuming Midge wouldn't be bothered. She deemed her business as frivolous. But Midge's mind was elsewhere. She slammed the bathroom door and hurled a container to the ground, shattering it.

Abe heard Miriam sobbing and hastened to check on her. But the sound of a piano being played with exceptional skill drew his attention. Expecting to find Ethan, he followed the melody to its source. Instead, he found Esther seated gracefully at the piano.
