The Staircase – Season 1 Episode 4

Published: Jul 11 2024

As the previous episode hinted, the trial has now commenced, yet the creators shrewdly offer mere glimpses of it, primarily focusing on the rigorous cross-examination of the Prosecution's witness, Dr. Raddish, who was instrumental in preparing the autopsy report. Episode 4 of The Staircase also introduces us to some familiar faces in the courtroom, adding depth to the proceedings. Additionally, we are treated to an interview with Michael's new partner, conducted in 2017, when the case gained momentum and Michael was released from prison after entering an Alford plea, acknowledging guilt based on the evidence presented against him.

The next significant event looms large: the exhuming of Liz Ratliff, a pivotal moment that captures the attention of the media and press. Dr. Radisch conducts Liz's autopsy, but the findings are damning for Michael. She concludes that Liz's death was also caused by a blunt object, ruling out a brain aneurysm as the cause. Agnes, the German nanny who looked after Martha and Margaret, is summoned as a witness, lending credence to the case.

A series of flashbacks paint a troubling picture of Clayton's mental state, including a heated argument he had with Kathleen over his behavior and her perceived moral superiority. Her testimony hints at Mike's abusive tendencies towards Martha during her childhood, stemming from his rigid disciplinary methods. Distressed by these revelations, she flees the courtroom, leaving a tense atmosphere that is briefly diffused.

Amidst these flashbacks, snippets from Sophie's, Mike's current partner, interview continue, intertwining with the courtroom scenes. Their discussions center on the intricacies of justice, objectivity, and the latest developments in the case. As the trial progresses, the house is readied for a visit by the jury members, eager to inspect the crime scene and assess the evidence firsthand.

Without any forewarning, Clayton unexpectedly returns, his comeback signaling a pivotal moment in the case. While tinkering with an abandoned car in the garage, he stumbles upon the so-called "murder weapon" - a blunt, lethal object. This discovery immediately bolsters the Defense's confidence, sensing a shift in the tide towards Mike's favor. However, they hesitate to put Clayton on the stand as a witness, fearing the Prosecution's relentless attempts to discredit his character and testimony, given his troubled past.

Expert testimonies from the initial trial are revisited, including those of Dr. Lee, adding to the already palpable tension within the Peterson household. The discovery of the murder weapon has not only escalated the legal drama but also sparked personal conflicts among the children. Mike, despite Rudolf's fervent pleas, decides to take the stand, but we are not privy to his testimony.

The closing arguments bring the trial to a climax, and surprisingly, we learn the verdict in the same episode. The Jury finds Mike guilty of Kathleen's murder, sentencing him to life imprisonment. As if echoing the previous episodes, another reconstructed sequence from that fateful night is unveiled - this time, portraying Mike's confrontation with Kathleen after she discovers the incriminating photos and emails, ultimately leading to her death, as painted by the Prosecution.

The episode concludes with Sophie editing the final touches of the documentary. It is then revealed that she is not only acquainted with the documentarians but also seems to have a deeper connection with them. Together, they watch the polished version of the original documentary in their French abode, reflecting on the tragic tale that unfolded before their lenses.
