Tokyo Vice – Season 2 Episode 8

Published: Jul 01 2024

Episode 8 of Tokyo Vice Season 2 kicks off with a bang, as the FBI swoops in and apprehends several Yakuza members in the serene paradise of Hawaii, USA. However, Jake is far from the shores of the States, having returned to his "home" ground. DS Nagata and Katagiri arrive, eager with anticipation, as Jake reveals that Tozawa has violated several federal laws by bypassing the donor transplant list. This revelation could be the US administration's ticket to extradite and imprison the yakuza leader.

Seeking clarity, Jake meets with Jason from the US Embassy in Tokyo, accompanied by Trendy. Jason remains guarded, revealing only that the tipoff against the yakuza stemmed from the FBI's own investigations.

Meanwhile, Samantha has a plan brewing. Building upon her interest in Akira from the previous episode, she secures a gun from Sato. She then marches towards Akira's house, accompanied by an oblivious Erika. With gun in hand, Samantha confronts Akira, demanding compensation for the money he allegedly stole from her. However, Akira's reality is starkly different from her assumptions. He's not a wealthy tycoon with piles of cash, but rather a fledgling celebrity, leaving Samantha distraught and disillusioned.

Eimi's covert mission with Tin Tin unearths a potentially treacherous truth about Baku. It transpires that Tozawa and Baku share a common past, growing up in the same district of Kansai, fostering a bond that explains Baku's sympathetic stance towards the yakuza leader.

Misaki is ushered into Tozawa's suite by Hagino, her heart racing with fear. She assumes that Hagino must have betrayed her secret affair to Tozawa. However, Hagino remains loyal to Kazuko, Tozawa's wife. Instead, Misaki is surprised with a gift from Tozawa—a house for her mother. Hagino escorts her to Kazuko, who interrogates Misaki with a series of probing questions regarding her conversations with Tozawa.

During a meeting with Minister Shigematsu, Kazuko outlines her vision for the future cabinet setup, emphasizing that whoever controls the financial markets—the finance ministry—will ultimately wield influence over the government. However, Tozawa interrupts the meeting unexpectedly, demanding that Shigematsu take a different portfolio. This blatant defiance of Kazuko's authority hints at a possible conflict that could lead to Tozawa's downfall.

Katagiri frantically replays the shooting from the previous episode, physically reenacting every detail in an attempt to uncover the undercover agent within his ranks. His despair intensifies as he realizes the traitor is among the higher echelons. DS Nagata's brave attempt to expose the truth only leads to her transfer and Katagiri's silencing.

Jake's visit to the US Embassy finds him connecting with Lynn, the designated head. Unwavering, he confronts her about Tozawa's involvement, unfazed by her subtle hints that the government intends to prosecute. However, Lynn later deceives Jake, her lies hinting at her complicity in the crime.

Eimi directs Jake on a secretive investigation, emphasizing the need for discretion. Sato, learning of Kaito's repeated suicide missions, stands defiant against Hayama. Hayama's rage knows no bounds, ordering his clan members to eliminate Sato. But they remain indifferent, allowing the two to engage in a fateful duel. After a grueling battle, Sato emerges victorious, slaying Hayama and ascending to his position, safely returning Kaito home to their mother's care.

A nostalgic flashback takes us back to the show's inaugural scene, where Jake and Katagiri meet Yabuki on Tozawa's behalf. Yabuki's stern warning to Jake about publishing the article against Tozawa's unethical organ donation practices falls on deaf ears. Though initially complying due to fear for his family's safety, Katagiri urges Jake to publish as soon as they step into the elevator. The stakes are too high to refrain from taking risks. Jake alerts Eddie in Minneapolis, forewarning him of potential repercussions. Initially displeased, Eddie concedes that Jake's bold move only deepens his respect for him. The closing scenes forebode an even darker future for the anti-Tozawa camp, with Shigematsu announced as Japan's next Prime Minister.
