True Detective – Season 4 Episode 5 1

Danvers presses Otis for details, and he describes a harrowing tale of being trapped beneath collapsing ice with other men. As a blizzard swirled around them, Otis heard screams that drew the men towards an unknown fate. He tried to warn them but blacked out, only to awaken in a hospital, his memories hazy and fragmented.

Danvers demands Otis to mark the cave system's entry points on a map, insisting on exploring it herself. Otis, however, isn't one to work for free and demands heroin as payment, a request that Danvers flatly refuses.

Elsewhere, Pete's life spirals further out of control as Kayla packs his bags and orders him to leave. Desperate, Pete turns to Hank, asking if he can stay with him.

Danvers and Navarro arrive at the spot Otis has marked, but they find the entry point sealed off with explosives, a chilling obstacle to their investigation.

Meanwhile, Leah finds herself in the midst of a protest at Silversky Mining, where a violent altercation erupts, drawing the attention of the police. Navarro, noticing someone roughly handling Leah, steps in to protect her, punching the offender. She calls Danvers, instructing her to bring Leah to the police station to teach her a lesson.

Elsewhere, Danvers receives a call from Connelly, summoning her to Silversky Mining for a meeting with him and Kate to discuss the riot. The situation is tense, and Danvers senses that there's more to this meeting than what's on the surface.

Back at the station, Pete reveals a bombshell piece of information to Danvers: Tuttle United, the same company funding Silversky Mining, is also funding Tsalal. This revelation raises the specter of a conflict of interest and a possible motive for both companies' involvement in Annie Kowtok's mysterious death, especially if she had uncovered their secrets about pollution.

As the episode comes to a close, the stakes are raised, and the mysteries surrounding the Night Country and Annie Kowtok's death deepen, leaving the audience eager for more revelations in the next installment.

Danvers ventures to Silversky Mining, handing Navarro the dossiers on Tuttle, Silversky, and Tsalal for further examination. However, the encounter between Katie, Connelly, and Danvers turns sour as Connelly erupts in fury, accusing Danvers of wandering into the detonated entry point, a territory belonging to Silversky. He sternly warns her to desist from any further attempts to link Annie Kowtok's demise with the Tsalal scientists.

Danvers counters by revealing that Silversky and Tsalal share a common parent organization for funding. Unexpectedly, Connelly veers off-topic, bringing up William Wheeler's controversial murder-suicide, insisting that it wasn't a suicide. He then announces that he's terminating the entire investigation.

Elsewhere, Kate convenes with Hank to strategize on how to neutralize Otis Heiss, fearing that he'll expose everything if he leads Danvers to the mine where Annie might have met her fate. Hank obliquely hints that he was the one who relocated Annie's body, hoping to secure the chief of police position. But his plans were thwarted by Danvers' timely arrival. Kate assures Hank of another opportunity if he manages to handle Otis.

Meanwhile, Qavvik returns the spiral-etched rock to Navarro. Her friend Kenny enlightens her that it's a marker, indicating weak spots in the ice where it's prone to cracking, leading to an entry point into the caves - The Night Country. Navarro relays this information to Danvers, but she shuts her down, declaring the case closed. Navarro leaves Danvers with a stark warning that Annie's death now rests solely on her shoulders.

Navarro liberates Leah from her detention cell, instructing her to return home. With Rose's assistance, Navarro scatters Julia's ashes into the sea, but a hallucination nearly costs her life. Fortunately, Rose reaches out to rescue her from the brink of disaster.

Danvers experiences a sudden reversal of opinion regarding the ongoing investigation, deciding to extract Otis from the clinic's confines and escort him to scout out the entrances to the caves. To secure his cooperation, she procures some heroin from the evidence room and presents it to him. As they embark on their mission, Danvers notices Hank's unwavering gaze, a foreboding sense creeping over her.

She summons Pete to her office, armed with his laptop. It transpires that Pete has delved into the mysterious murder-suicide of William Wheeler, piecing together the truth: Danvers and Navarro were the perpetrators, staging it to resemble a murder-suicide. Alas, Hank stumbled upon Pete's investigation, discovering the incriminating evidence and promptly alerting Connelly. Consequently, Connolly utilizes this information to abruptly terminate the case.

Danvers urgently instructs Pete to vacate Hank's residence and relocate to the dilapidated shack lurking behind her house. Pete accepts the offer, relocating to the shack and settling in. Meanwhile, Danvers escorts Otis to her abode, inviting Navarro to join them. Otis maps out the safest and most accessible route into the caves, known as The Night Country. Upon completion, Danvers hands him the heroin, and he retires to the bathroom to indulge.

Suddenly, Hank appears at Danvers' doorstep, claiming he's been ordered to retrieve Otis. Otis, panicked, attempts to flee, but Hank reacts swiftly, firing a fatal shot. His gun now trained on Danvers, the tense moment is interrupted by Pete's arrival, brandishing his weapon. Hank pleads with his son, begging for mercy. Danvers urges Pete to proceed with caution. Hank's confession shocks Pete - he reveals he was the one who moved Annie Kowtok's body. This revelation prompts Pete to fire, shooting Hank as he raises his gun to execute Danvers.

The episode culminates with Navarro's arrival. She urgently informs Danvers that they must hasten to the caves, as crucial evidence linking to Kate's attempted cover-up awaits them. She instructs Pete to tidy up the carnage and transport the bodies to Rose. Without delay, Danvers and Navarro board their car and speed towards the caves, determined to unearth the truth.
