Dylan O'Brien yearns to harness his voice as a beacon for others. Reflecting on his journey, the veteran of "The Maze Runner" series expressed his aspiration to amplify the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community and their multifaceted narratives by starring in projects like his latest cinematic venture, "Ponyboi." In an exclusive interview with E! News, Dylan revealed, "My life is intertwined with individuals from the queer and transgender spectrums. Supporting those I cherish and advocating for their stories, especially within this industry at this juncture, has always come naturally to me."
Although "Ponyboi," currently gracing theaters, was filmed in 2022, the "Teen Wolf" heartthrob expressed profound gratitude for the timing of its release, spotlighting queer narratives amidst the current social climate. "I am deeply thankful that it's premiering during this pivotal moment, especially considering the challenges our country faces," Dylan continued. "There couldn't be a more poignant or meaningful time for this film to see the light of day."
The 33-year-old actor also expressed his enthusiasm for audiences to witness his co-star, River Gallo, who penned the screenplay and stars as a young intersex sex worker fleeing from the mob after a botched drug deal. "Witnessing a film like this, which represents the transgender community with a leading intersex character unlike anything seen before—so raw, chaotic, and exhilarating—is a game-changer," Dylan enthused. "It's a bold middle finger to the status quo, precisely what we need right now. It's incredible, and I'm eternally grateful to be a part of it."
Beyond being meticulous in script selection, driven by "a place of my heart and my gut," Dylan shared what else compels him to choose his projects. "[It's about] finding collaborators and artists who ignite my inspiration, whose voices I crave to hear more of," he elucidated. "If I can play a part in championing their endeavors or being part of a new voice resonating within this industry, then absolutely, let's embark on this journey together."
