The Hip Hop Alliance has confirmed the passing of Afrika Bambaataa, a towering figure in the genesis of hip-hop culture, at the age of 68. In a poignant tribute, the organization underscored his pivotal role in forging a "global movement steeped in peace, unity, love, and unbridled joy," marking the dawn of hip-hop as both a musical genre and a potent cultural force.
Born Lance Taylor in the Bronx during the epoch of the black liberation movement, Bambaataa co-founded the Universal Zulu Nation in 1973, an international advocacy group that sought to steer youth culture away from violence and towards creativity. As a teenager, he became a member of the Black Spades gang, leveraging his leadership skills to spearhead this influential collective.

Bambaataa's global fame was cemented with the release of his 1982 hit "Planet Rock," which is credited with shaping the contours of hip-hop in the 1980s. His vision transformed the Bronx into "the cradle of a culture that now spans every corner of the globe," according to Reverend Dr. Kurtis Blow Walker, executive director of Hip Hop Alliance.
Throughout the decades, Bambaataa collaborated extensively with artists like James Brown and John Lydon, contributing to politically conscious projects such as the anti-apartheid anthem "Sun City" in 1985. He led Universal Zulu Nation until 2016, stepping down amid allegations of sexual abuse from the 1980s and 1990s. In a statement, he vehemently denied these accusations, stating they were "baseless and a cowardly attempt to tarnish my reputation and legacy in hip-hop at this time."
In 2025, Bambaataa lost a civil case after being accused of child sexual abuse and trafficking, failing to appear in court as per The Guardian's report. The Hip Hop Alliance acknowledged that these allegations have complicated his musical legacy, which "has been the subject of earnest discourse within our community."
A correction has been made on April 10th to specify that Afrika Bambaataa passed away at the age of 68. An earlier version mistakenly stated his age as 67.
