According to Deadline, Landau succumbed to cancer on July 5, after a valiant 16-month battle. His journey in Hollywood began as a production manager on films such as F/X and Manhunter, later evolving into a prolific producer who worked on iconic projects like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Dick Tracy. At just 29, he ascended to the position of executive vice president at 20th Century Fox, overseeing blockbusters like Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Speed. This pivotal role ultimately led to his collaboration with Cameron on the action-packed thriller True Lies.

Landau later took the helm as chief operating officer of Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment, extending the Avatar franchise into various platforms, including video gaming, a themed area at Disney World, and a Cirque du Soleil spectacle.

In a heartfelt tribute, Cameron reminisced about Landau's "eccentric humor, magnetic personality, boundless generosity, and unwavering resolve," which were the cornerstone of the Avatar universe. "His legacy transcends the films he produced," the filmmaker continued. "It's the personal example he set — unyielding, compassionate, inclusive, indefatigable, insightful, and truly one-of-a-kind. He crafted magnificent films not through wielding power but by radiating warmth and a love for cinema. He inspired us to be the best version of ourselves every day. I have lost a cherished friend and my closest collaborator for 31 years. A piece of my heart has been forever taken."

Kate Winslet, who starred in Titanic and reunited with Cameron and Landau for Avatar: The Way of Water, expressed her profound grief in a statement. She recalled knowing Landau since she was 20 and noted that "his fervor for filmmaking only intensified with time." Winslet fondly reminisced, "Jon Landau was the epitome of kindness and goodness. He was a man of profound empathy, exceptionally skilled at supporting and fostering teams of incredibly talented creatives. His strength in life lay in understanding the significance of family, both at home and at work. He always exuded joy and gratitude. I find it impossible to believe that I'm writing these words, that he is no longer with us."

On July 6, Saturday, Zoe Saldaña, the star of Avatar, grieved for Landau in a heartfelt Instagram post. She wrote, "Dear Jon, my words fail me in this moment of profound loss. Your departure has left a gaping hole in our lives. You've departed far too soon. My heart is with you and your loved ones in this trying time. Your profound wisdom and unwavering support have indelibly shaped many of us, and for that, we are forever grateful. The cherished memories we shared will forever occupy a sacred space in my heart. Your legacy will continue to illuminate our path and guide us through life's journey. Rest peacefully, dear Jon. You will be dearly missed, never forgotten."
