Born in Memphis in 1971, Doherty first captivated audiences as the child actress Jenny Wilder in the beloved show "Little House on the Prairie," appearing in 18 episodes. She continued to amass a stellar list of guest appearances throughout the 1980s, ultimately catapulting to mainstream fame with her portrayal of Heather Duke alongside Wynona Ryder and Christian Slater in the cult classic "Heathers" of 1989.

It was soon after that she landed the role that would forever be synonymous with her name. Commencing in 1990, she embodied Brenda Walsh, a teenage girl from Minnesota whose life underwent a seismic shift after relocating to California, in the iconic teen soap opera "Beverly Hills, 90210." Though she bid farewell to the show after four seasons, she gracefully reprised the role in the 2008 CW reboot "90210." She even appeared as herself in the meta-comedy "BH90210" in 2019, portraying a fictionalized version of herself while working on a reboot of "Beverly Hills, 90210" alongside her former castmates.

Among Doherty's other notable roles in the 1990s were in Kevin Smith's "Mallrats," a sequel to "Clerks," and a series of made-for-TV movies. However, in 1999, she made a triumphant return to the small screen with "Charmed." The series starred Doherty alongside Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs for the first three seasons, portraying a trio of powerful witches known as The Charmed Ones. The show ran for a total of eight seasons on The WB, cementing Doherty's reputation as one of the most beloved TV stars of her generation.

In March 2015, Doherty bravely announced her diagnosis of breast cancer. Despite her relentless fight against the disease, she continued to work and openly share her health struggles until her final moments.
