The talented designer and Season 18 alumnus of Project Runway, Sha'Vi Lewis, whose full name was Franklin 'ShaVi' Lewis Frierson Jr., has passed away at the age of 39. The heart-wrenching news of his demise was confirmed by his aunt, Deidra DivaDoll Elkerson, in a poignant Facebook post on Tuesday, February 25th. While the family chose to keep the cause of his passing confidential, TMZ reported that Sha'Vi had died the previous day, on February 24th.
"My extraordinary, gifted nephew, Sha'Vi Lewis, has left this earthly realm," Deidra began, her words tinged with sorrow. "I will no longer hear his cherished greeting, 'Hey Auntie Diva.'" She called upon people to uphold the Lewis family in their prayers, naming his mother, Joyce Solomon-Frierson, his father, Franklin Frierson, his brother, Troy Solomon Frierson, and his sister, Akira Frierson Wood, among those who needed comfort.
"I harbor no doubt that he resides in a far better place, where I can picture him receiving a warm welcome at the pearly gates, embraced by his beloved ancestors and loved ones who had preceded him," she continued, her imagination painting a vivid scene of joy. "Oh, what a celestial revelry he must be enjoying with his grandparents, grandfather, uncles, aunts, cousins, and cherished friends!"
"Rest in boundless joy, my nephew, knowing that you etched an indelible mark upon this world," she concluded her tribute, accompanying it with a collage of photos, one capturing him intently working at a sewing machine.
Akira Frierson echoed this sentiment in her statement to TMZ, stating, "We are grappling with disbelief as we confront the stark reality that our bright star has been extinguished. As days unfold, we strive to comprehend a future devoid of your presence." She highlighted Sha'Vi's greatness, even as the world was just beginning to recognize his name, and asked for continued prayers as they mourned Franklin Shavi Lewis Frierson Jr.
Sha'Vi Lewis, a native of New Jersey and an alumnus of Clark Atlanta University, dedicated his life to fashion design. He nurtured his own clothing line, served as the creative director for Stephen F, a menswear company, and lent his talent to the second season of Pose, as well as designing for celebrities such as Cynthia Bailey.
During his tenure on Project Runway Season 18 in 2019, Sha'Vi charmed audiences and fellow contestants alike, ultimately finishing in 10th place after his departure in the sixth episode. His absence was deeply felt by his fellow designers, Brittany Allen and Nancy Volpe Beringer, who both paid heartfelt tributes on Tuesday.
Brittany Allen's Instagram post was a poignant reflection of her loss, stating, "Words escape me. My heart weeps. The world and this industry will forever dim without your radiant light." She added, "Your love, laughter, and unwavering support were everything. Season 18 will forever hold a special place in my heart. Rest in power, @shavilewis. Love, your Brit Brat." She also shared Instagram Stories of Sha'Vi, captioning them with thoughts on the fragility of life and the preciousness of friendships.
Nancy Volpe Beringer's tribute was equally moving, writing, "If one is fortunate, they encounter a soul who fills their heart and soul with an unbreakable bond of love, a connection that spans eternity. Sha'Vi Lewis, you were that person in my life. Your family became an extension of my own." She continued, "I am at a loss as to how to navigate life without your boundless love, infectious humor, and pure essence. But Sha'Vi, I know I am fortunate to have had you in my life, and you will forever shine brightly as a guiding star for your family, friends, and the fashion community. I will forever cherish you and miss you. Rest in peace."
