The nominations for the prestigious 2024 Gotham Awards have been unveiled, with the film "Anora" soaring to prominence, leading the pack with a remarkable four nods, including a nod for Best Feature. In the highly competitive Best Feature category, "Anora" will lock horns with formidable contenders such as "Babygirl," "Challengers," "A Different Man," and "Nickel Boys." The latter film has also secured two other nominations, one for Best Director (RaMell Ross) and the other for Breakthrough Performer (Brandon Wilson). Meanwhile, both "Babygirl" and "A Different Man" have garnered two nominations each, with "Babygirl" being recognized in the Best Lead Performance category for Nicole Kidman's stellar turn, and "A Different Man" being acknowledged in the Supporting Performance category for Adam Pearson's exceptional work.
Apart from Best Feature, "Anora" has also been nominated for Best Director (Sean Baker), Outstanding Lead Performance (Mikey Madison), and Supporting Performance (Yura Borisov). Other films that have been recognized multiple times include "I Saw the TV Glow," which has received three nominations, and "All We Imagine as Light," "Hard Truths," and "The Fire Inside," each earning two nods.
The Gotham Awards ceremony will not only celebrate the competitive achievements but will also honor Franklin Leonard and The Black List with the Anniversary Tribute, marking the platform's 20th anniversary. Denis Villeneuve will be feted with the Director Tribute, and the cast of "The Piano Lesson" will receive the Ensemble Tribute.
Since 2021, the Gotham Awards have embraced gender-neutral categories to recognize performers. However, this year marks a significant shift as TV categories will not be featured during the fall awards show. Instead, the Gotham Awards have launched a separate TV Awards ceremony held in June.
The Gotham Award nominees are meticulously selected by committees comprising critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. A distinct panel of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and other film industry professionals directly involved in the creation of films will determine the ultimate recipients of the awards.
Past Gotham Award winners have included Academy Award winners such as "Everything Everywhere All at Once," "CODA," "Nomadland," "Marriage Story," "American Factory," "Moonlight," "Spotlight," and "Birdman." The 34th Gotham Awards will take place on Monday, December 2, at its historic venue, Cipriani Wall Street, in New York.
Below is a comprehensive list of this year's nominees. Full disclosure: Lovia Gyarkye, arts and culture critic at The Hollywood Reporter, served on the nominating committee for Breakthrough Director.
