David E. Kelley clings tenaciously to the hope that "Big Little Lies" might make a triumphant return for a third season. The second season of the hit HBO series graced our screens in 2019, a couple of years after the premiere of the inaugural season. While it has been half a decade since fresh episodes captivated audiences, the series' creative mind revealed to People magazine that he harbors a "hopeful" sentiment about season three coming to fruition.
"We're crossing our fingers for it," he expressed at the Gotham TV Awards on Monday. "The first two seasons were an absolute blast, and we're all eager to revisit that magic... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll materialize."
"Big Little Lies" boasts an impressive ensemble of A-listers, including Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman (mentioned twice inadvertently, but nonetheless a pivotal figure), Lauren Dern, Meryl Streep, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley. Should a third season materialize, Kelley acknowledged that, while none of the cast is currently "under contract," assembling such a high-caliber talent pool and their respective publicists would be no mean feat. Nevertheless, he assured, "Everyone is deeply committed to the project."
Kelley heaped praise on Liane Moriarty, the author whose novel inspired the TV series, for fueling the show's enduring appeal. He even teased that Moriarty has penned "another book" upon which a potential new season could be based. "A lot of the credit goes to Liane Moriarty, who authored the original book," he said. "Moreover, she has written another book that season three will draw inspiration from. It's truly an extraordinary assembly of talent."
In January 2024, sources informed The Hollywood Reporter that stars and executive producers Witherspoon and Kidman were actively brainstorming ideas for a third season, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to pitch it to the network. Five months hence, the actresses shared their aspirations for a renewed season in an interview with Vanity Fair, subtly hinting at the imminent advent of a new chapter.
"I keep getting calls from Laura [Dern], Zoë [Kravitz], and Shailene [Woodley]," Witherspoon recounted, to which Kidman responded playfully, "But we are, indeed! We're moving swiftly and passionately, and Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book."
