James Gunn struggles to crack ‘Batman’ in new DC universe

James Gunn delved into the challenges of tackling Batman within the nascent DC universe, a captivating fictional realm that serves as the backdrop for tales featuring DC Comics' iconic characters, such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Upon assuming the helm of this universe in 2023, Gunn promptly embarked on reimagining these three legendary superheroes. While Superman soars toward the silver screen on July 11th, the fates of the other two remain in a state of flux.

In an insightful conversation with Rolling Stone, Gunn unveiled the reasons behind the delay. "Batman poses the greatest hurdle for me personally within the entire DC landscape," he confessed. "I'm not penning Batman's script, but I'm collaborating closely with his writer to ensure we get it just right, because he holds immense significance for DC, much like Wonder Woman."

Just last week, Gunn announced that the Wonder Woman film is actively being scripted and is progressing more seamlessly compared to Batman's production. "Wonder Woman, I believe, is somewhat easier for me to tackle, as there haven't been countless, infinite interpretations of her—certainly not in films, but really, anywhere, compared to Batman," he elaborated.

The director of Guardians of the Galaxy further explained that Batman's narrative has been explored from every conceivable angle, stating, "Half of the comics DC has churned out over the past three decades feature Batman." He added that, given the character's status as one of the world's most renowned and beloved superheroes, "his ubiquitous presence can also render him mundane. So, how do you craft a property that captivates viewers?"

Gunn emphasized that Batman must possess a compelling reason to exist within this universe and that they cannot merely produce a film about him "solely because he's Warner Bros.' biggest character," which he undeniably is. "But rather, because there's a genuine need for him in the DCU," he clarified.

For now, Robert Pattinson's Batman sequel, titled The Batman Part II (a venture outside the DCU), is slated for release in 2027.
