Karen Gillan has gracefully joined the esteemed ensemble of Amazon MGM's eagerly anticipated remake of the 1980s cult classic, 'Highlander.' Henry Cavill takes the helm as the lead, with an all-star cast that boasts Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and the talented Marisa Abela. Directed by the acclaimed Chad Stahelski, this action-packed fantasy, under the Amazon MGM's United Artists banner, is poised for a grand theatrical debut. Principal photography is set to commence at the close of September.
The original 'Highlander,' released in 1986, featured Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish warrior who uncovers his immortality. Alongside Sean Connery's Ramirez, MacLeod wages epic battles against fellow immortals across centuries, culminating in a climactic showdown in modern times where, as famously quoted, "there can be only one."
In this riveting remake, Cavill embodies MacLeod, while Crowe steps into the shoes of Ramirez. Bautista portrays the ruthless warrior, The Kurgen, and Marisa Abela, from the acclaimed series 'Industry,' assumes a pivotal role. Karen Gillan, meanwhile, breathes life into the character of Heather, MacLeod's mortal spouse and the enduring love of his immortal existence.
Michael Finch penned the script for this reimagining, with Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt producing through United Artists, alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski's 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner. Should it prove successful, Gillan could add a third major franchise to her impressive resume.
Renowned for her portrayal of the cybernetic alien Nebula in Marvel Studios' 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Avengers' sagas, Gillan has also starred in Sony's 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' and 'Jumanji: The Next Level,' with a third installment on the horizon. Currently, she stars in Neon's 'The Life of Chuck,' adapted from Stephen King's novella. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it garnered the prestigious People's Choice Award.
Karen Gillan is represented by UTA, Maison Two, Linden Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen.
