The highly anticipated anime masterpiece "Scarlet," helmed by Oscar-nominated Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda, will make its North American theatrical debut on December 12, amid the lucrative year-end holiday season and the heart-pounding awards circuit. On Monday, Sony Pictures, which is coproducing and co-financing the film alongside Studio Chizu and Nippon TV, revealed the release date. Sony will be tasked with distributing the film globally, excluding Japan, where Toho will oversee its theatrical rollout.
"Scarlet" weaves a mesmerizing tale of a courageous princess who defies the boundaries of time and space. Hosoda's resume boasts an array of acclaimed works, including "Belle," "Wolf Children," and the 2018 Oscar-nominated animated feature "Mirai," which premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Joining him in producing "Scarlet" are Yuichiro Saito and Nozom Takahashi of Studio Chizu, alongside Toshimi Tanio of Nippon TV.
As the founder of Studio Chizu, Hosoda has consistently drawn inspiration from observing his own children's interactions and his enduring fascination with family dynamics, evident in films such as "The Boy and the Beast" (2015) and "Wolf Children" (2012). This rich tapestry of personal and fantastical elements promises to make "Scarlet" a cinematic journey like no other.
