"The Avengers are a no-show. Who will stand as the guardians of humanity?" These misfits? Hardly convincing. Marvel has unveiled an eccentric, albeit playful (or is it serious?) teaser for "Thunderbolts," the quirky anti-hero MCU flick set to ignite the summer movie season on May 2nd. This trailer, a humorous nod to A24's distinct trailers with their signature style and title cards, introduces a mismatched crew of villains embarked on clandestine missions for the American government.
The eclectic ensemble boasts David Harbour portraying Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Sebastian Stan reprising his role as Bucky, Lewis Pullman as Bob a.k.a. "Sentry," and Florence Pugh returning as Black Widow's sister, Yelena Belova. Adding to the intriguing mix are Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the handler Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The teaser boasts credentials from the likes of "The Green Knight"'s cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo, "Hereditary"'s production designer Grace Yun, "Minari"'s editor Harry Yoon, and "Everything Everywhere All At Once"'s composer Son Lux – quite the impressive lineup. Yet, even this doesn't ignite my desire for another Marvel adventure. Perhaps it's just a jest, but Marvel's apparent desperation to capture audiences' attention feels palpable... "Choose your allies wisely."
A world devoid of the Avengers doesn't signal the absence of superheroes. Oh no, there's a team, and they call themselves the Thunderbolts. A band of MCU supervillains has been enlisted to undertake government assignments. Helmed by American filmmaker Jake Schreier, known for directing "Robot & Frank," "Paper Towns," and episodes of various TV shows, as well as music videos, "Thunderbolts" brings a fresh perspective to the superhero genre. Schreier is joined by screenwriters Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, whose script is based on the Marvel Comics creation by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley.
