Mikey Madison, unbeknownst to her at the time, would soon experience the overwhelming impact of her role in the 2022 reboot of "Scream." "Let me be frank," Madison confessed to Collider, "when I embarked on this film, it may sound innocently naive, but I was unaware of the colossal fanfare that this franchise commanded, a revelation I've come to cherish now." How could anyone fault her? The rising star of "Anora" hadn't even seen the light of day when the initial two installments hit the silver screens in 1996 and 1997. "The fans of 'Scream' and horror aficionados are truly extraordinary, but I joined the fold quite innocently," Madison elaborated.
In Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's 2022 contribution to the slasher saga, Madison's Ghostface persona delivered a fateful blow to the beloved Sheriff Dewey Riley, portrayed masterfully by David Arquette. "I recall feeling somewhat melancholy, thinking, 'Such a magnificent character. It'll be poignant to witness his departure.' Subsequently, I grasped the profound sorrow many viewers felt," Madison recounted. "People have approached me, expressing their dismay, saying, 'I despise what transpired. I'm furious with you.' And I'd respond, 'I'm deeply sorry, but I didn't pen the script!' It wasn't my desire to portray such a scene."
Elsewhere during the interview, Madison recounted her audition journey for "Scream," a milestone in her cinematic career. "I had auditioned, submitted a tape, and then heard nothing for about eight months or so. I had nearly forgotten about it," she shared. "Suddenly, they reached out, asking, 'Would you be interested in joining the film? The character you'd portray is the infamous Ghostface.' I eagerly responded, 'Absolutely, that sounds thrilling. I'd love to be part of it, especially as Ghostface,' because it's a fascinating, enjoyable twist, and the character's trajectory is wild and unpredictable. These films possess a self-awareness where actors are fully cognizant of the movie's genre, allowing us to have immense fun with our roles."
Rounding out the star-studded cast of the 2022 "Scream" were Jenna Ortega, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Melissa Barrera, and Jack Quaid.
