Molly Ringwald Says John Hughes’ “Didn’t Want” His Films to Be Remade

During an interview at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, Molly Ringwald, the actress known for her role in The Breakfast Club, expressed her opposition to any remakes of John Hughes' films. She emphasized that these films cannot be remade without the late director's permission, which he didn't grant.

"They can't be remade because they can't be made without John Hughes' permission, and he didn't want the films to be remade," she said firmly. "And I don't think they should be."

Hughes, who wrote and directed several beloved '80s films, including Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Pretty in Pink (1986), passed away in 2009 at the age of 59.

Despite not being interested in a direct remake of The Breakfast Club, Ringwald expressed her willingness to see a new interpretation of the story that reflects the issues of the current generation.

"If somebody does something, I would prefer that they take elements from Breakfast Club and build on it, representing what's going on today," she noted.

The Run Amok star also shared that she still occasionally runs into former cast members, including Jon Cryer, whom she sees the most. She expressed her love for the entire cast, particularly Annie Potts, and noted that it's hard to believe that it's been 40 years since Pretty in Pink was released.

During a Breakfast Club reunion at Chicago's C2E2 convention in April 2025, Ringwald echoed similar sentiments. "I personally don't believe in remaking that movie because I think it's very much of its time," she said.

"It resonates with people today, but I believe in making movies that are inspired by other movies but build on them and represent what's going on today," she added. "You know it's very white; you don't see a lot of different ethnicities; we don't talk about gender - none of that. And I feel like that really doesn't represent our world today. So I would like to see movies that are inspired by The Breakfast Club but take it in a different direction."
