Jessica Fletcher is back in action as the iconic crime-solving mystery writer of "Murder, She Wrote." Universal Pictures announced on Wednesday that its feature film adaptation of the Emmy-winning series will hit theaters on December 22, 2027. Jamie Lee Curtis stars as the beloved amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher, a role that was first brought to life by Angela Lansbury in the long-running CBS show.

Filmmaker Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) is attached to direct the movie from a script by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. The project adapts the series, which was co-created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson, and William Link. Amy Pascal produces the film alongside Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood for Lord Miller.

"Murder, She Wrote" was set up through Lord Miller's first-look deal with Universal and comes as the production company celebrates the success of its box office smash "Project Hail Mary." Another film, Sony's animated feature "Buds," is also set for release on that date.

"Murder, She Wrote" launched in September 1984 and ran for 12 seasons. Lansbury earned 12 Emmy nominations for her performance as the resident of the fictional Cabot Cove, Maine, who became involved in solving murders. In 2013, NBC gave a pilot commitment to a series reboot of "Murder, She Wrote," with Octavia Spencer set to star. However, after Lansbury, who passed away in 2022, expressed her disapproval of a new version, the project did not move forward.

During the premiere of her movie "Freakier Friday" last summer, Curtis told Entertainment Tonight that she was excited to tackle "Murder, She Wrote." "It's happening," said the Oscar-winning actress. "I'm very excited, but I'm trying to reign in my enthusiasm until we start shooting."
