Chimes of matrimonial bliss might soon resonate for Celine Song, who has been entrusted with penning the sequel to Sony's beloved hit, "My Best Friend's Wedding," as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The project is still in its nascent stages, with Song currently attached solely as the screenwriter, not the director, and it may not necessarily occupy the forefront of her creative endeavors.

The forthcoming film aims to build upon the timeless charm of the 1997 classic, which featured Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, two inseparable best friends who made a childhood pact to marry each other if they remained single by the age of 28. When Mulroney's character becomes engaged to another woman (Cameron Diaz), Roberts' Julianne has just four days to thwart the wedding and reclaim her heart's desire. This romantic comedy was a box office sensation, raking in $127 million domestically ($256 million adjusted for inflation today).

As both a director and screenwriter, Song has elevated the romantic genre with her work, notably "Past Lives," which garnered Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. This film served as a launching pad for Greta Lee, who starred alongside Teo Yoo as former childhood friends who reconnect after decades apart. Song's subsequent film, "The Materialists," has quietly become a hit this year, grossing $52.1 million worldwide and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.

In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, Duane Byrge praised "My Best Friend's Wedding," stating, "Despite some plot pitfalls that might give pause, this contemporary comedy shines with astute observations about the complexities of women who are perhaps too clever for their own good. 'My Best Friend's Wedding' is an endearing love story, albeit lacking the timeless elegance one might aspire to. Overall, Bass' screenplay is kind-hearted and fair, and while it may not ascend to the grand pantheon of romantic comedies, it's a delightful treat. Special commendation to director P.J. Hogan for immersing this wedding in a feast of opulent technical delights."
