"Cherish the journey; growing up is often overhyped." Freestyle Digital Media has unveiled an official trailer for "Magnetosphere," an enchanting indie coming-of-age comedy helmed by the talented filmmaker Nicola Rose. Having made its debut at the esteemed 2024 Hamilton Film Festival and Dances With Films Festival last year, the film is poised for a VOD release later this month, catering to all eager viewers.
Set against the backdrop of 1997, when Comet Hale-Bopp graced the skies, "Magnetosphere" introduces us to 13-year-old Maggie Campion (portrayed with grace by Shayelin Martin), a young girl grappling with a world she perceives uniquely due to her rare condition, synesthesia. This mysterious affliction weaves her senses together, allowing her to see sounds, hear colors, and experience the world in a mesmerizing tapestry of sensations.
As Maggie embarks on a new chapter at a fresh school, she must also navigate the whimsical dynamics of her quirky family, the throes of first love, and the chaotic whirlwind of a local theater production. In this unpredictable environment, Maggie starts to embrace the notion that her so-called "weirdness" could very well be her greatest asset.
Starring alongside Martin are Steven He, Colin Mochrie, Tara Strong, Patrick McKenna as her theatrically inclined father Russell, Tania Webb as her pragmatic mother Helen, and Debra McGrath, among others. The film exudes a charming, made-for-TV movie vibe, tinged with heartwarming authenticity.
Maggie's journey begins as she and her family relocate across the country. Shy and cautious, she has always kept her synesthetic experiences a closely guarded secret. However, the upheaval of moving, starting at a new school, and her father's ambitious yet ramshackle production of "The Pirates of Penzance" at the local theater soon shake up her world.
Amidst this tumult, Maggie encounters a colorful array of characters: her first love, her cherished best friend, an insightful teacher who acknowledges her differences, and the eccentric, talented handyman/exterminator Gil, who harbors his own hidden gifts. These eclectic individuals guide Maggie to a profound realization – her synesthesia has a name, and it makes her extraordinary, whether she embraces it or not.
Written and directed by Nicola Rose, "Magnetosphere" marks her sophomore feature following the acclaimed "Goodbye, Petrushka" (2022) and numerous short films. Produced by Tierney Boorboor, Rebeka Herron, and Drew Martin, the film premiered at the 2024 Hamilton Film Festival and Dances With Films Festival. Freestyle Digital Media will release Rose's "Magnetosphere" directly to VOD in the US on July 22nd, 2025, promising a delightful summer escape for all who dare to dream.
