Directed by Ira Sachs and set in late 1980s New York City, the film stars Malek as Jimmy George, an actor battling AIDS, a life-threatening illness, and landing what may be his final major role. The next day, at the amfAR Gala held at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, Malek shared his feelings by saying, "It was extraordinary. If it's once in a lifetime, I will take it." He added, "Just being here is once in a lifetime; if it happens again, it will be glorious. I feel humble, honored, and very human. I'm grateful."

After the screening, Sachs expressed gratitude to the festival for appreciating The Man I Love, its cast and crew, stating, "This is a film about what we can bring to each other through art, through love, through pain, through memory." The Delta director further added, "I hope that there are some memories we share from this evening for the festival and our love of cinema. This is the place where we can do that together." He concluded, "None of us will be here forever, but there are certain moments that we will remember. And I tried, with this film and this incredible cast, to fill this movie with things that I want to remember. So, this night will now be added to that."

The emotional response from Malek and Sachs underscores the profound impact of The Man I Love and its ability to touch the hearts of audiences at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
