After Anora's recent spree of high-profile victories, which encompassed top honors at the Critics' Choice, Producers Guild, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, and Independent Spirit Awards, and with star Mikey Madison's triumphs at the BAFTAs and Spirit Awards thrown into the mix, it came as a shocking surprise that Sean Baker's Palme d'Or-winning film was surprisingly overlooked at the 2025 SAG Awards, an event where the winners are decided by members of the actors' union, SAG-AFTRA.
Madison, however, did manage to secure some screen time. She kicked off the awards ceremony with a heartfelt speech about her acting journey during the SAG Awards' iconic "I'm an actor" segment. She had the audience in stitches as she presented clips from the film alongside co-stars Mark Eydelshteyn and Yura Borisov, who was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actor SAG Award. Regrettably, despite their strong performances, Madison, Borisov, and the rest of Anora's ensemble cast failed to take home any awards that Sunday night.
Instead, Conclave emerged victorious, bagging the top prize for Best Cast, following up on its BAFTA award for Best Film from the previous week. In another twist from earlier high-profile award ceremonies, Timothée Chalamet emerged triumphant in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in the rock biopic A Complete Unknown, marking his maiden win at a major awards show for this role. Fellow nominee Adrien Brody had previously won Best Actor for his work in The Brutalist at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, and BAFTAs. Both Chalamet and Brody are now nominated for the Best Actor Oscar.
Elsewhere in the film category, Wicked entered the SAG Awards with a leading five nominations but failed to win any of them. Given that A Complete Unknown scored four SAG Awards nominations, it was somewhat surprising that it only walked away with one win. Similarly, double film nominee The Last Showgirl also failed to triumph on Sunday night.
On the TV front, Only Murders in the Building and star Martin Short pulled off surprise wins for Comedy Ensemble and Actor in a Comedy Series, respectively, defeating favorite contenders Hacks and The Bear. Short, however, missed the show due to illness, as fellow OMITB star and friend Steve Martin revealed late last week that Short had contracted COVID.
Speaking of The Bear, despite its four nominations this year, the award-favorite went home empty-handed from Sunday night's SAG Awards. This was despite Jason Segel, star of Shrinking, jesting to host Kristen Bell that the Jeremy Allen White-led series "wins all of our awards" in the comedy categories. Yet, on Sunday night, neither The Bear nor Shrinking triumphed.
