"What were you thinking? You shouldn't have listened to all of them. It's what she wants." Following a triumphant premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, A24 has unveiled a second trailer for the indie horror film undertone, formerly known as The Undertone. It's incredibly eerie! Set for release in US theaters in March, this spine-tingling audio horror thriller first premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal last summer, a testament to its Canadian origins.

A podcast host, Evy (Nina Kiri), who covers spooky content, moves in to care for her dying mother. When she's sent recordings of a pregnant couple's paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, with each tape pushing her closer to the brink of madness. "It wants to be heard!" It's a deeply chilling audio horror film! From writer and director Ian Tuason, undertone stars primarily Nina Kiri as Evy, making it an entirely one-character, one-location horror film. Alongside Kris Holden-Ried, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, Sarah Beaudin, Seled Calderon, and Adam DiMarco, Evy is the only main character shown on-screen (along with her sick mother). All other characters are heard only as off-screen voices.
I saw this at Sundance one midnight and it scared the living daylights out of me! Don't miss it.
Struggling under the weight of caring for her dying mother, Evy (Nina Kiri) seeks refuge from the loneliness of her fragmented reality. Now living in a house filled with keepsakes and memories, her sanity and structure lie within her work on a supernatural podcast, The Undertone. While she usually plays skeptic to the creepy (and often disturbing) audio files sent to her by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) for podcast fodder, the latest submission hits differently. A series of 10 recordings from a young pregnant couple are unfurled one by one, each more ominous than the last. As Evy draws parallels to her current plight, hidden messages manifest, pushing her further toward madness.
undertone, also known as just undertone, is written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Ian Tuason, making his feature film debut after directing The Occurrence on Hollow Road and a few other shorts previously. Produced by Cody Calahan and Dan Slater, this chilling film first premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival and also screened at Sundance. A24 will debut Tuason's undertone in select US theaters starting on March 13th, 2026. Who's scared?
