Sydney Sweeney's boxing-themed film, "Christy," is poised to make its mark on U.S. theaters via the esteemed distribution banner of Black Bear. This comes as Teddy Schwarzman's outfit, which also bore the film's creative birth, has recently unveiled a U.S. distribution wing helmed by seasoned CAA veteran, Benjamin Kramer. Marking the division's grand debut, "Christy" is set to grace the silver screen on a strategically awards-conducive date of November 7th.
Directed by David Michôd, the film will make its prestigious premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before embarking on its theatrical journey. Starring Sydney Sweeney in the title role of Christy Martin, the movie chronicles the life of a trailblazing female boxer whose personal narrative is as gripping as it is inspiring. Accompanying Sweeney are Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian, with the screenplay penned by Mirrah Foulkes and Michôd.
Produced by an ensemble that includes Black Bear, Anonymous Content, Votiv, Fifty-Fifty Films, and Yoki, "Christy" promises a cinematic experience like no other. Launched this summer, Black Bear's U.S. distribution arm aims to roll out an impressive slate of up to 12 films annually, and "Christy" stands as its inaugural masterpiece.
Kramer enthused, "'Christy' is both a heartfelt and uncompromising celebration of resilience, humor, and the enduring spirit of humanity amidst life's unpredictable twists and turns. We eagerly anticipate sharing this remarkable story with audiences nationwide."
The producing team comprises Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Black Bear's Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel and Justin Lothrop of Votiv, Michôd, and Sweeney herself. Executive Producers span an illustrious list, including Black Bear's Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Andrew Golov, and Clementine Quittner; Anonymous Content's David Levine and Nick Shumaker; alongside Mirrah Foulkes, Harrison Huffman, Brad Zimmerman, and Ryan Schwartz.
UTA Independent Film Group and AC Independent co-represented the U.S. rights and brokered the deal, while Black Bear takes charge of international distribution, ensuring that "Christy's" powerful message reaches a global audience.
