‘Tangled’: Kathryn Hahn in Talks to Play Villain Mother Gothel

Absolutely delightful! Now, she's the antagonist. Kathryn Hahn, who garnered an Emmy nod for her portrayal of the nefarious Agatha Harkness in a couple of Marvel Studios TV shows, is diving into the darkness once more. The actress is in negotiations to embody Mother Gothel, the magical, step-mother-to-be, in Disney's live-action adaptation of "Tangled." This move follows the studio's decision to cast rising Australian actress Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, the star of Disney Channel's musical "Zombies" franchise, as the leads. Croft will play Rapunzel, the curious and resourceful aspiring princess with magical hair, while Manheim will star as Flynn Rider, the cocky outlaw thief who aids her in escaping her tower.

Michael Gracey, whose credits include musical biopics like "Better Man" and "The Greatest Showman," is directing this feature film, which, like the original, will feature robust musical elements. Kristin Burr, who has longstanding ties to the studio and served as a producer on last summer's "Freakier Friday" and 2021's live-action "Cruella," is producing. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson ("Do Revenge," "Thor: Love and Thunder") penned the script.

Disney remains tight-lipped on the matter. However, Hahn's casting will be a magical delight for fans who had been fervently fan-casting her as the antagonist in this project, even when actress Scarlett Johansson was temporarily attached to it. The role is entertaining, with delightful lines and even a musical number titled "Mother Knows Best."

Hahn recently starred in Marvel series "Agatha All Along," reprising her role as the magical enchantress who causes chaos for both heroes and villains. The part earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and the show was one of the more popular entries in the Marvel series. More recently, she starred in "The Studio" as Maya Mason, the head of marketing in the acclaimed Apple series, which also earned her an Emmy nomination.
