Things are once again taking a thrilling turn as Disney breathes new life into a live-action adaptation of Tangled. The project has secured the talents of Michael Gracey (known for The Greatest Showman) to helm the directorial reins, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson crafting the screenplay. And in a casting move that has sparked excitement, Scarlett Johansson is being considered for the role of the cunning Mother Gothel.
The producing team is equally impressive, featuring Kristin Burr of Burr! Productions, alongside Emmy-winning producer Lucy Kitada (of The Baby-Sitters Club fame).
The original Tangled, which graced theaters in 2010, follows the enchanting tale of Rapunzel, memorably voiced by Mandy Moore. Tony Award-winning Broadway star Donna Murphy lent her voice to the iconic Mother Gothel in the animated version.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed in April that the live-action Tangled project had hit a temporary pause, a decision that came in the wake of the underperformance of Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot's live-action Snow White at the box office. However, Disney has since rebounded with a blockbuster success in the form of the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch. Additionally, Barry Jenkins’ prequel film Mufasa: The Lion King made a strong impression upon its debut late last year.
Adding to the anticipation, director Thomas Kail’s live-action take on Moana is set to feature Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson in the lead roles, with a theatrical release slated for July 10, 2026. The original animated Moana film, released in 2016, was followed by a theatrical sequel last year.
Rooted in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Rapunzel, the original Tangled centers on the long-haired heroine (Moore), who has spent her entire life confined to a tower until she concocts a daring escape plan with a would-be thief (Zachary Levi). The film was a global box office hit, raking in over $590 million and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Song with the enchanting "I See the Light."
