The eagerly anticipated live stage adaptation of "The Hunger Games," heralded as both "immersive" and "dangerous," is set to premiere this year. The groundbreaking production, titled "The Hunger Games: On Stage," will commence on Monday, October 20, at the prestigious Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre. Based on Suzanne Collins' acclaimed book series and beloved film franchise, this theater experience promises to captivate audiences.
Tickets for this highly anticipated performance will go on sale at 1 PM on Thursday, March 27. The play has been masterfully adapted by the multi-award-winning playwright Conor McPherson and will be directed by Matthew Dunster, renowned for his work on "The Pillowman" and "2:22 A Ghost Story."
A synopsis of the show paints a vivid picture: "Drawing inspiration from the original "Hunger Games" story, this enthralling tale of courage, defiance, and unyielding human spirit follows the brave heroine Katniss Everdeen on her journey of self-discovery. As she emerges as a symbol of rebellion and hope, audiences will be spellbound by her story."
Collins expressed her excitement about the adaptation, stating that she is "thrilled" to have her cherished franchise in the capable hands of McPherson and Dunster. She praised McPherson's adaptation, calling it "fantastic" and "quite unique from the screenplay." She further praised Dunster's immersive and dynamic staging, noting that it offers audiences a fresh perspective on the story.
Dunster assured that McPherson has delivered a "taut and dangerous play" that is true to his world-renowned style. He said, "Conor McPherson has captured the essence and power of the book and film, providing us with the kind of tense and thrilling play that he is known for. He honors the young voice of Katniss Everdeen, placing her at the forefront of the narrative."
He continued, "Our world-class creative team has been workshopping the play for over a year, carefully refining our theatrical vocabulary. We aim to create something as impactful and edgy as Suzanne Collins' novel and as passionate and exciting as the movie. However, we will do it in our own unique way – on the stage. We want our 'Hunger Games' to be thrillingly theatrical and unlike any other production."
McPherson shared his inspirations behind the stage adaptation, noting that as a father of a teenager, he finds it especially gratifying to work on a story whose values of resilience and moral courage resonate with young people in these uncertain times. He said, "Our primary focus is to honor Suzanne Collins' achievement with a faithful adaptation that is as thrilling on stage as it is on the page."
He added, "It has been a great pleasure to witness the evolution of the theatrical language of this show through explosive workshops under Matthew Dunster's inspired partnership with choreographer Charlotte Broom and their tireless team of young performers."
As an added bonus for fans, Suzanne Collins' latest "Hunger Games" novel, "Sunrise on the Reaping," will be released on March 18. Lionsgate has announced plans to adapt the latest book into a film, slated for release on November 20, 2026.
