Will Smith is embarking on a new cinematic venture as Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to his upcoming film, "Supermax," a high-octane action thriller that promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The film, directed by David Gordon Green ("The Exorcist: Believer," "Halloween"), is set to stream exclusively on Prime Video worldwide, with filming scheduled to commence in mid-August.
"Supermax" follows the story of two FBI agents investigating a murder that takes place within the world's most secure prison. Smith, 57, stars as the lead character, Rex, a role that showcases his signature charm and action prowess. The screenplay, penned by David Weil and David J. Rosen, the creative minds behind the television series "Invasion" and "Hunters," also serves as the foundation for the film's intriguing narrative.

Smith's production company, Westbrook, shared the exciting news on Instagram on Thursday, May 14th, accompanied by a simple yet powerful emoji: "." The post reads, "Huge announcement today. We are thrilled to be teaming up with director David Gordon Green & our partners at @amazonmgmstudios @miramax and The Picture Company to bring this incredible film to life."
Smith's recent projects have been met with much anticipation and success. In 2022, he released "Emancipation," where he portrayed an enslaved man during the U.S. Civil War. Additionally, he re-united with Martin Lawrence for the fourth installment of "Bad Boys," which grossed $193.5 million domestically and ranked as the 11th highest-grossing film in North America that year.
Smith is also developing a sequel to his 2007 film "I Am Legend," which he has been working on alongside Michael B. Jordan. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2024, Smith expressed that progress on the project was "looking good." Following Jordan's Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for his performance in "Sinners," a source close to Smith said that both actors have immense respect for each other's talent.
In February 2025, Smith revealed during an influencer's Twitch stream that he planned to approach Zendaya for a role in a sequel to his 2008 film "Hancock." He said, "There's a really cool, really cool Hancock 2 idea. We haven't even talked about it, so I'll give you one little piece — Zendaya will be being approached for Hancock 2, for a role in Hancock 2."
With each new project, Smith continues to prove his status as a Hollywood heavyweight and a force to be reckoned with in the film industry.
