Austin Abrams, the talented actor from the series "Euphoria," has emerged as the leading choice to spearhead the reboot of the horror-action film "Resident Evil," a collaboration between Sony Pictures and filmmaker Zach Cregger. Cregger, who catapulted into the horror genre's elite circle with his groundbreaking film "Barbarian," has penned the script and will helm this feature-length project. Currently, he is also gearing up for the release of his next horror ensemble, titled "Weapons," where Abrams joins an esteemed cast featuring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Should the deal materialize, "Resident Evil" will mark a much-anticipated reunion for Abrams and Brolin.
Sony Pictures is swiftly advancing with "Resident Evil," planning a summer shoot across European locales, with Cregger already reportedly on the scout for perfect shooting spots. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing this film, with Robert Kulzer from Constantin, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment (known for "Barbarian"), Miri Yoon (of "Weapons"), and PlayStation Productions all lending their expertise to the production.
The earlier installments of "Resident Evil," inspired by the iconic Capcom video games, blended horror, sci-fi, and action genres, following a heroine's relentless battle against zombies and the sinister Umbrella Corporation, the bio-warfare firm responsible for unleashing the monsters. However, insiders透露, the new project is steadfastly leaning towards the horror genre, also infusing elements of a wilderness survival thriller. The screenplay is co-written by Shay Hatten, whose credits include "John Wick: Chapter 4" and Zack Snyder's "Army of the Dead." Sony declined to comment on the matter.
Nicole Brown will oversee the project on behalf of Sony's Columbia Pictures. Abrams was last seen in "Wolfs," an action-comedy on Apple TV+, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. This rising star has been active in the industry since he was 11, with notable appearances on "The Walking Dead" and "This Is Us." On the film front, he has featured in "Scary Stories We Tell in the Dark," the Amazon YA romance "Chemical Hearts," and the Netflix black comedy "Do Revenge." Abrams, who portrayed Ethan Daley in HBO's "Euphoria," is represented by WME and Amplified.
