On Sunday night, the Oscar winners were not the sole recipients of astonishment. As A-list actors, directors, and producers converged across Los Angeles for Hollywood's grandest event, a preliminary earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck the North Hollywood area at approximately 10:13 p.m. PT, according to the USGS.
While the 2025 Oscars' main attraction unfolded at the heart of Hollywood, along the renowned Hollywood Boulevard where the Dolby Theatre resides, the tremor's effects were palpable throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. The earthquake struck mere hours after the Oscars concluded; however, many celebrities were still mingling at after-parties.
A source revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Chappell Roan was on stage performing at the 33rd Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party when the quake occurred, although none of the attendees seemed to notice the shaking. Meanwhile, another source at the Governors Ball, the exclusive after-party following the Academy Awards, stated that the attendees could feel the tremor.
KABC reported that there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.
Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the 97th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday. Anora emerged as the night's big winner, sweeping five awards, including Best Picture. In the acting categories, Adrien Brody won Best Actor for The Brutalist, Mikey Madison secured Best Actress for Anora, Kieran Culkin took home Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, and Zoe Saldaña claimed Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez.
