In a candid confession, Adam Scott, the star of "Severance," recently opened up about an era when he was on the brink of bidding farewell to Hollywood. During a guest appearance on Amy Poehler's podcast, "Good Hang," Adam unveiled that he had contemplated abandoning his acting career after Michael C. Hall snagged the role of David Fisher in HBO's acclaimed series "Six Feet Under," a part that Adam had eagerly pursued.
"Fortunately, it didn't pan out for me, as Michael was nothing short of perfect and incredible for the role," exclaimed the 52-year-old with genuine admiration. Speaking of Hall, Adam, who is also known for his role in "Big Little Lies," elaborated, "He's phenomenal, and I just wasn't ready back then."
Digging deeper into how close he had come to landing the gig, Adam, who will soon be seen in "Madame Web," revealed, "We both auditioned for it—Michael and I." Recalling the moment, he admitted, "That sting of rejection really hurt."
"It was a pivotal point where I contemplated throwing in the towel, thinking it might be time to read the writing on the wall and walk away from acting altogether," Adam shared, referencing his role in "The Good Place." He emphasized how losing out on what was arguably "the show" of the early 2000s—a series that "dwarfed all others" during its 2001-2005 run—made the setback particularly painful.
Reflecting on "Six Feet Under's" monumental impact, Adam reiterated, "It was, indeed, 'the show.'" Though fate had other plans, Adam eventually made a guest appearance in the second season as the young David Fisher's (Michael's character) boyfriend, an experience he described as "enjoyable" and noted that Michael was "a delight."
"Yes, it was a tough blow, a challenging moment. But those experiences, however daunting, are crucial for growth," he concluded thoughtfully.
