The official cause of demise for Robin Kaye, the music supervisor of "American Idol," and her husband, Thomas Deluca, has been officially disclosed. Both aged 70, Kaye and Deluca passed away in their Encino, California, residence on July 10, around 4:45 p.m., due to multiple gunshot wounds, as revealed by their death certificates, obtained exclusively by PEOPLE.
Deluca expired instantly upon being shot, while Kaye, a talented music composer, succumbed to her injuries mere minutes later, further detailed in their death certificates. The certificates categorize their deaths as homicides.
Although the certificates indicate that they sustained fatal wounds on July 10, causing their demise within minutes, their official date of death is listed as July 14, at 4:14 p.m., the time when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department discovered their bodies. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office earlier informed PEOPLE that the couple was pronounced deceased at 4:14 p.m. local time on July 14. Autopsies were conducted on both Kaye and Deluca, aiding in the determination of their cause of death, according to the documents. Notably, Kaye’s initial death certificate, issued on July 23, mistakenly stated that an autopsy had not been performed; however, an amendment filed on August 4 corrected this oversight. The couple was cremated on July 23.
On the fateful day of July 10, Kaye and Deluca returned home from grocery shopping to find an intruder – a stranger adorned in a baseball cap, gray shirt, and black sandals, as per a police affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. In a brutal and execution-style manner, they were shot multiple times in the head with a gun allegedly belonging to them, as previously revealed by the LAPD and the Los Angeles District Attorney to PEOPLE.
The couple's front door was left unlocked, and their alarm system was disabled, according to the police affidavit. Law enforcement received two 911 calls and visited Kaye’s and Deluca’s luxurious $4.5 million home multiple times on July 10. However, it wasn’t until four days later, on July 14, that authorities discovered their bodies after a concerned friend of Kaye’s requested a welfare check on the esteemed music industry couple.
The tragic murders of Kaye and Deluca left the Encino neighborhood in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley in shock. On July 17, three days after their bodies were discovered, 22-year-old Raymond Boodarian was charged with their killings.
Facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree residential burglary, a dazed and confused Boodarian arrived in a Van Nuys courtroom donning a suicide gown on Wednesday, August 20, for his arraignment. Judge Martin L. Herscovitz suspended the hearing and referred Boodarian to a mental health court for evaluation after he repeatedly failed to respond to the judge’s prompts. Boodarian’s public defender, Nancy Kolocotronis, informed the court of Boodarian’s alleged suicidal tendencies.
Boodarian is scheduled to appear in mental health court on September 3 in Hollywood and remains incarcerated without bail. Judge Herscovitz emphasized that Boodarian’s arraignment would depend on the evaluation of his mental fitness, stating on August 20 that he believed it wasn’t “fair” to proceed without the suspect’s participation.
