Andy Samberg has revealed that Amy Adams refused to perform a "decidedly risqué" tune on "Saturday Night Live," prioritizing the well-being of the youthful fanbase of the enchanting film "Enchanted." During the November 4th episode of "The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast," the 46-year-old Samberg recounted the tale of how Adams, now 50, declined the Lonely Island's proposition just as she was gearing up to host SNL in 2008.
"I shall spare you the explicit details, but suffice it to say, this was a duet intended for Amy Adams and me, steeped in vulgarity," Samberg shared on the podcast. Adams had embodied the role of the soon-to-be princess Giselle in 2007's "Enchanted," a whimsical blend of live-action and animation that poked fun at Disney's classic fairy tales by placing its heroine in the gritty realm of New York City, where happily-ever-afters were a rare commodity.
Samberg elaborated, "Picture us as a senior couple enjoying a picnic. One of us gets stung by a scorpion, and in my dying moments, I lament that we didn't delve deeper into our sexual desires. It was meant to be an anthem celebrating this unfulfilled passion."
Though Adams admitted she found the song amusing, she cited a compelling reason for turning it down. "She said, 'I can't pull this off. Little girls are utterly enchanted by "Enchanted" at this point. They'll stumble upon this, and it could leave a lasting scar. I can't juggle that right now,'" Samberg recounted.
The podcast further explored how Adams and Samberg ultimately collaborated on a Lonely Island track titled "Hero's Song," veering away from the risqué number, which featured Samberg as a Batman-esque superhero getting roughed up for trying to thwart a robbery in progress involving Adams.
"Within moments, a mother and her daughter walked by. The young girl's awe-inspiring reaction upon seeing Amy Adams made me realize, 'She was absolutely right,'" Samberg revealed. "It served as a profound lesson for me. It's something I'd never considered in our industry."
Samberg continued, "She genuinely feels an obligation and responsibility towards those kids, and she takes it incredibly seriously. I was deeply impressed by her commitment."
Adams reprised her role as Giselle in the 2022 sequel to "Enchanted," titled "Disenchanted," reuniting with original cast members including Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, and James Marsden. More recently, Adams has ventured beyond fairy tale realms, with her latest cinematic endeavor requiring her to grow out her own chin hair for her role as Mother in the upcoming film "Nightbitch," set for a December 6th theatrical release. Speaking to Variety in an October 22nd profile, Adams proudly stated, "The facial hair – it was all mine. I viewed it as a raw expression of the human experience, devoid of any artificiality or filters. Or tweezers!"
