On Sunday night, Anna Sawai captivated the audience by clinching the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal in 'Shogun.' The esteemed award was presented to her by Colman Domingo and Salma Hayek Pinault, amidst a thunderous applause. Sawai kept her acceptance speech concise yet heartfelt.
"A myriad of people deserve my gratitude, but I'll strive to be brief," Sawai said as she ascended the stage. "A profound thank you to the voters for choosing me, although my unwavering vote would always be for Kathy Bates." She further added, "My heartfelt appreciation to our phenomenal writers. Without a robust script, unfurling our full potential as actors would be a herculean task. Thank you, everyone else. I owe you a more elaborate thank you later."
Sawai earned this accolade for her remarkable depiction of Toda Mariko in 'Shogun,' an adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 best-selling historical novel. This victory also marks a significant milestone, as it comes over four decades after Yoko Shimada won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series for portraying Mariko in the 1980 miniseries 'Shogun.'
Sunday night wasn't the sole occasion where Sawai was recognized for her performance in the FX drama. Last year, she made history as the first actress of Asian descent to win in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category at the Emmys.
In a fierce competition, Sawai emerged victorious over notable nominees such as Kathy Bates ('Matlock'), Emma D’Arcy ('House of the Dragon'), Maya Erskine ('Mr. & Mrs. Smith'), Keira Knightley ('Black Doves'), and Keri Russell ('The Diplomat'). Additionally, 'Shogun' bagged the Globe for Best Drama Series.
Hosted by the comedian Nikki Glaser, the 2025 Golden Globes were held at the glamorous Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday evening. For the complete list of winners and all the red carpet glam, click here.
