Ava Jones, of Nickerson fame, who narrowly escaped death when a car collided with her family almost three years prior, forcing her into a medical retirement from basketball, has revealed her heart-wrenching battle with cancer. In an emotional Instagram post, Jones disclosed her diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma, penning, "The biopsy results confirmed Hodgkin's lymphoma—news that no one ever anticipates hearing, especially after the grueling two and a half years I've spent pushing myself to the limits and recovering from that fateful car accident. My body, resilient and strong, places my faith firmly in the capable hands of the doctors at the University of Iowa."
The harrowing incident dates back to July 2022, when Ava, accompanied by her mother Amy and father Trey Jones, stood on a Louisville, Kentucky sidewalk. Their lives were forever altered when Michael Hurley, at the wheel of a car, plunged into them. Tragically, Trey lost his life in the accident, while Ava and Amy sustained critical injuries.
Hurley faced the wrath of the law, convicted of murder, driving under the influence, and assault, ultimately receiving a 70-year prison sentence. Jones, who had pledged her talents to the University of Iowa, was compelled to medically retire from basketball last summer. However, the university honored her scholarship, enabling her to pursue her academic aspirations amidst this adversity.
