In an insightful conversation with Gayle King for CBS, Tina Knowles, the esteemed mother of Beyoncé and Solange, bravely disclosed her battle with Stage 1 breast cancer. "I've always been diligent about my health," she confessed to King, "but I was utterly astonished by the diagnosis."
Throughout the interview, Knowles recounted how a missed mammogram, amid the upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially hindered the early detection of her condition. She explained how the routine screening slipped through the cracks during that challenging time and wasn't rescheduled until the subsequent year. It was then that doctors discovered two tumors—one benign and the other, a Stage 1 cancer. Fortunately, Knowles is now cancer-free, having undergone a successful lumpectomy to remove the malignant tumor.
The Knowles matriarch then painted a vivid picture of how her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange, stood by her side with unwavering support throughout her journey. "I was filled with nerves," Knowles shared, "but they began to lighten the mood with their humor." She recounted heartwarming moments, including Solange showing her a viral video about the word "demure" and both she and her cousin, Angie Beyoncé, serenading her with songs.
"Their antics made me burst into laughter, taking my mind off the situation," she continued. "I expressed my gratitude for their presence, remembering a song they often sang, 'Walk With Me,' which speaks of God accompanying you through life's journey and shielding you. I entered that surgery room feeling assured that God had my back."
Knowles, who was honored at the prestigious 2020 Glamour Women of The Year ceremony, recalled Beyoncé's insistent advice against attending due to her health condition. "Mama, you're not yourself right now," Knowles recounted Beyoncé saying. "She emphasized, 'Your health comes first. Don't go.'"
