In Netflix's new show, "Running Point," premiering on February 27th, Kate Hudson and Brenda Song portray an iconic duo that captivates viewers. Hudson's character, Isla, faces quite a challenge as she steps into the role of president for one of the world's foremost basketball teams, while Song's character, Ali, stands by her side as her devoted best friend and unwavering supporter, ready to dish out some tough love when needed.
Fortunately, it appears that the camaraderie extends beyond the screen, as Song shares a similar bond with her co-star in real life. During an interview at PaleyLive's Screening and Panel for the new show on February 26th, Song, who is a mother to her sons Dakota, 3, and Carson, 2, with her partner Macauley Culkin, revealed that she benefited greatly from Hudson's wisdom.
"I turned to Kate for so much guidance," she admitted. "I tried to absorb everything she shared, because she has three children older than mine, and she's such a relaxed and experienced mom who has been through it all."
Hudson, who is mom to Ryder, 21, Bingham, 13, and Rani, 6, was always there for Song with reassurance and practical advice. "Whenever I had a question, she'd say, 'Oh, honey, don't worry, I've been through it,'" Song recounted, adding that Hudson was always offering to connect her with people and resources.
"She's truly the person who knows everyone and has experienced it all," Song praised her co-star. "Kate Hudson is my personal rolodex."
On set, Song also looked up to the show's creator, Mindy Kaling. At the time of filming, Kaling had just welcomed her third child, daughter Anne, in February 2024. "Mindy literally had a baby just two weeks before we started filming," Song said with amazement. "She showed up on set with notes in hand, and we were like, 'You just gave birth!' It was incredible."
While Song has Hudson and Kaling for support, she also knows she can rely on her fans as she navigates the ups and downs of motherhood. "I've been incredibly fortunate to be able to do what I love for so long, and if it wasn't for the continuous support from my fans, I wouldn't be able to do it," Song said, who has previously received support from fans for being candid about her motherhood journey.
"I'm incredibly grateful, especially now in this new phase, when I feel like a lot of young moms or new moms can relate to the uncertainty and the shift in focus that comes with motherhood," she continued. "To have that kind of support, understanding, and open conversation is truly beautiful."
"I love that we live in a world where we can have these open conversations without fear of judgment," she added. "I think it's wonderful, and to be a part of that kind of progress is really lovely."
Knowing how crucial it is for someone like Song to open up about her struggles, we couldn't agree more with her sentiments!
